Jokes: School Jokes is filled easy to read, easy to understand jokes your kids are gonna love. I have both my 8 and 10 year-olds frantically writing their favorites down so they can work on remembering them to tell their friends. I will say I've heard oodles of jokes in my day, but many of these are fresh to me.

This is a story about the members of Trojan Wolf who use their magic and knowledge on a mission where they stumble upon genetically modified animals.

I really enjoyed reading this.

In my opinion, I found the characters' actions and decisions to be natural.

This book will put hair on your chest

Rarely has a book had a more perfect title. I am a huge fan of "Weasels Ripped My Flesh!", the previous anthology of men's adventure mag stories put out by this team, and so I eagerly ordered this book the very moment I saw it listed. In a word, it's great. These stories may be trash, they may be pulp, they may have been quickly written to order and on tight deadlines, but, man, what great pulp trash they are. If you're a fan of vintage Jim Thompson or Charles Willeford or Richard Stark you will love Walter Kaylin. If you love Mickey Spillane you will love Kaylin even more, because he's better. Oh, hell, just buy the damn thing! I have to get off now because I want to reread some of them...

They Don't Write 'Em Like This Anymore!

The title of this review is something one hears a lot these days but never is it more true than with this incredible collection from the past! Unselfconscious, non-PC, hard-hitting, action-packed tales aimed specifically at men? This doesn't happen too often in the modern day where far too much fiction is geared to the lowest common denominator in order to have the widest appeal. And real men are an endangered species.

Back in the 50s and 60s, as the pulps were in the process of morphing into paperback originals, a bevy of men's magazines flourished. With titles like Men True Adventure, For Men Only, Male, Stag or just plain Men, these magazines offered up action yarns, "true" crime accounts, "true" war accounts and the like. No messages, no political agendas, no hand-holding and no political correctness, the tales in these pages were unleashed upon an unsuspecting world for one reason and one reason only: to entertain! Violence, bloodshed, unrelenting action and just plain, flat out fun, was the order of the day. Grab the reader by the throat and choke the life of out of him.

Now thanks to editors Robert Deis and Wyatt Doyle the best of these rip-roaring tales are being collected for new readers to marvel at. HE-MEN, BAG MEN & NYMPHOS collects 15 fantastic tales by Walter Kaylin. Considered by many to be the king of the testosterone tale, Kaylin does not disappoint. These tales start hard and fast, rocketing along and you've just got to keep turning pages to find out what happens next. And that "gotta" begins with the titles: "Meet Our Terms Or We Destroy 500 Million People", "Surf Pack Assassins", "Snow-Job From A Redhead", "The Helicopter Hero and the 100 Ladies of 'Undress Atoll'"... Reading titles like these, how can you NOT want to read the stories?

Well, now you can! This collection is the very paragon of reading pleasure. Kaylin knows how to tell a story and does an excellent job with each approach he employs here. Action abounds, bullets fly, the world is saved a time or two and character pieces present us with three-dimensional glimpses into tough guys in the thick of the action. Reading through the collection I was taken with how fresh the reading experience was. Sure, the stories are dated but the approach, the pacing, the quick characterizations were such a great change of pace from modern day doorstops where it takes 300 pages for something to happen. In these tales it takes about 300mm of text before something blows up.

If you want to see what fiction was like before the branding, corporate-controlled, ghost-written, careful pap we are spoon fed these days, then this collection is the place to start. This was when fiction was fun! Even if you're not a fan but are simply in the mood for something different to occupy your reading time, this collection fits the bill. The retro cover design, reproductions of the original magazine covers and title pages, essays on Kaylin and words from the man himself take you back in time to the newsstand of the 1960s where you've got a dollar and a hankering for some escape. I loved the book start to finish and I can only hope another Kaylin collection is in the works. Pick it up. You'll be glad you did.

The great Walter Kaylin can now be re-discovered

What a discovery! Just the story titles alone let you know what lies ahead: "Surf Pack Assassins" and "Snow-Job from a Redhead." Those are just two examples of Walter Kaylin's adventure sagas from the '50s, '60s and '70s. Check out his descriptive style: "Gundar Jens was a blond, blue-eyed giant, muscled like a gladiator and with the gentle expression of a cow that has just calved. Albie Blaine was half-a-foot shorter, thin to the point of emaciation, snap-mouthed as a woman's purse and with an enormous, lidless eye circled by a mottled snake tattooed on his chest." Yowza! Great universe, good plot and suspense but too sex scenes delay the story.

Too many sex scenes and each of them is way too long. YAWN. They delay the story. Also I personally do not care for flashbacks.

About the Author
Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol (Russian: 1 March [O.S. 19 March] 1809 – 4 March [O.S. 21 February] 1852) was a Russian dramatist, novelist and short story writer.

Considered by his contemporaries one of the preeminent figures of the natural school of Russian literary realism, later critics have found in Gogol's work a fundamentally romantic sensibility, with strains of Surrealism and the grotesque ("The Nose", "Viy", "The Overcoat," "Nevsky Prospekt"). His early works, such as Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka, were influenced by his Ukrainian upbringing, Ukrainian culture and folklore. His later writing satirised political corruption in the Russian Empire (The Government Inspector, Dead Souls), leading to his eventual exile. The novel Taras Bulba (1835) and the play Marriage (1842), along with the short stories "Diary of a Madman", "The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich", "The Portrait" and "The Carriage", round out the tally of his best-known works.

Tara Bulba- Cossack Glory

I read this book in my youth and loved it then. Revisiting it hasn't diminished the richness of its style or the quality of its impact. I love it still. Taras Bulba captures the wildness of spirit of the Cossacks and their role in the early Russia. It shows the magnificence of the qualities of love, loyalty and bravery. It also shows the opposite side of the human psyche mainly cruelty and despair in the face of overwhelming force.
There are always two values in Russian literature and music a high booming note and a low resonating note. This triumph of Gogol exhibits both in true Russian style. In a way this illuminates the components of Russian character.
It is by no means easy critiquing a work by the great Gogol but to advise readers to sample this great work I feel is a duty and a privilege.
By all means read this book, it goes to the heart of the Cossack and Russian soul. It will answer the basic question about the Russian people's love of motherland which has echoed throughout Russian history.

Some Errors But Not Bad

I bought this book to read Taras Bulba having become curious about the story from its adaptation into music by Leos Janacek. Taras makes up the majority of the book at 122 pages (from 285) and although I did not give much thought to the other stories in the book they are masterly and a joy to read. I was quite unprepared for the satanic rites of St. John's Eve and the character study of The Cloak is very good. How The Two Ivans Quarreled is a comic story about an imagined insult that goes way beyond an argument. The Mysterious Portrait is a supernatural story about a painting of an old man that appears to be incredibly life-like and The Calash.

There is an introduction by John Cornos who provides a bibliography of other editions of Gogol's writings but it is a mystery as to who has translated the stories in this edition. The language is good and the stories read well but there are occasional misspelling (for example Ha for Has) and there are footnotes that are difficult to read because the letters overlap. There also are pages where one line will go over the margin. Despite the errors, this edition of Gogol is not bad and the mistakes are not excessive but one does wonder if anyone proof read the book and just did not care.

An Excellent Introduction to the Work of Nikolai Gogol

"Taras Bulba and Other Tales" is a collection of six novellas and stories by Nikolai Gogol, one of the pioneers of the Russian novel during the early 19th century. What's remarkable about this collection is the range of stories - everything from historical epic to ghost stories to stories that focus on the dynamics of human relationships. Gogol is a keen observer of human frailty, fickleness and folly and these themes permeate his stories.

"Taras Bulba" is the longest piece in this collection and it stands out from the other stories in terms of grandeur and scale. The novella is Gogol's attempt to create an Ukrainian national epic as he romanticizes a military campaign by the Zaporozhian Cossacks against the Poles. Gogol reflects the biases and prejudices of his time - the depiction of Poles and Jews in the novella is problematic for us today. Yet taken on its own terms, "Taras Bulba" is a cultural celebration for an Ukraine overshadowed and dominated by Russia.

The rest of the stories share a much narrower focus than "Taras Bulba." The short story "St. John's Eve" describes a folkloric encounter with the devil. "The Cloak" describes the downfall of a lowly cog in the bureaucratic machine. The comic story "How the Two Ivans Quarreled" depicts how a simple disagreement between two friends explodes into a complex, never-ending lawsuit. In "The Mysterious Portrait," a poor, young artist receives his heart's desire and in the process looses himself. The collection ends with "The Calash," a brief fable against putting on airs and showing off.

"Taras Bulba and Other Tales" is an accessible collection of novellas and short stories of Nikolai Gogol and is an excellent introduction to the work of this classic Russian author.

A pleasant surprise

There is something for everyone in this collection of 10 short stories from author Christopher Gibson. For those with cat fancies - "Sibling Rivalry" and "Your Cat" will delight; and whilst the first short story featured, "Food for Thought" may set an interesting tone, it is not -the- tone of the collection. There is humour, subtle observations and an entertaining array of characters, especially in "The Caretaker".

If you need something for a commute, a longish journey or just something to read, then you won't be disappointed with this collection.

Great for reading on commute, enlightning about life in the UK

I took a chance on this book when it was offered as a free promo and found a great companion on my bus ride to work. With its 10 stories, A Gallimaufry of Short stories, is perfect for picking up and putting down whenever your time allows. The author presents an observant and witty outlook on modern life, from obsessions about organic food and healthy eating to the companionship provided by Your Cat.

My favorite story was "Red Men," which proved very educational about the role of iron ore drilling for coastal communities in North West England and the legacy of this industry up to this day.

Really entertaining stories that will make you chuckle and think about life and human existence (and cats, of course!)

He of a Comforting Tone

More often than not Mr. Gibson employs a narrative voice imbued with a comforting and grandfatherly tone. His waxing nostalgic rings true in several stories. While not a fan of animal lit, Gibson exhibits quality writing and powers of feline observation that I'm guessing few have (including myself). I enjoyed the set-up in 'Food for Thought' and would like to see more of that variety. While not problematic, Mr. Gibson will deliver a more polished product when he discovers page breaks. All in all, Mr. Gibson's book, 'A Gallimaufry of Short Stories', is likely to make you smile more than once as you down a cup of coffee or tea.

Sizzling, heartwarming, laugh out loud funny!

Multipublished author, Cathryn Fox has another hit on her hands with her debut release with Entangled Publishing!

Friends. What would we do without them? Or in Eden and Jay's case, what wouldn't we like to do with them?

I'm not going to give you another rundown on the plot, you've read that several times over and they've all hit the nail right on the head. This short, sexy read has it all. Great plot, a touching backstory for Jay--the super protective smoking hot cop next door, Eden, the actress with a secret wish to break free of her good girl image and get her kink on, Jay's frustration at lusting after his best friend while unable to make his move for fearing he'd be too rough for the sweet little girl from Iowa and scare her away with his dark sexual desires...It's the perfect recipe for a hot little read.

Oh, did I say I wasn't going to get into the plot? Sorry. But it's difficult not to, because this novella is just that good.

Ms. Fox has done an exceptional job of developing an intriquing, attention holding story that warms the heart, makes you laugh,[you have to see what Jay says about Eden's self composed script] and sets your e-reader on fire with scorching hot love scenes, all wrapped up in four neat little chapters that make you want to shake your iPad so more will magically appear.

Well done, Ms. Fox! And in the infamous words of Dickens..."please sir, I want some more"...or was that Eden? LOL!

This book just jumps into the action, which makes sense - it's a short story. this short story definitely left me wanting more. This story would have been a fantastic full length novel, but for what it is, it was fantastic. The author did a great job creating a full and engaging story with the few words used.

I was pleasantly suprised with the depth of character portrayed. Often with the shorter stories,, you're left wanting more due to wanting more character development. In this case, I wanted more because the characters were so well developed and easy to like that I wanted more time with them!

Plus... This story was HOT! I can be iffy on BDSM - but this story was able to encapture the theme without oppressing women. I am very impressed! I would definitely recommend this book, and I look forward to reading more from this author.

Hold Me Down Hard by Cathryn Fox is a super short novella that gives the reader a brief insight into the relationship of not so innocent country girl, Eden Carver and her next door neighbor, Police Officer Jay Bennett. Aspiring actress Eden wants to move out of the 'friend zone' with Jay so she and her friends write a sexy script and convince him to run lines with Eden.

If you're looking for a quick, spicy romance read, with it's brisk page and interesting characters then this is the short story for you!

Honest Portrayal of Life Under Fire

Danny Morrison's first novel, West Belfast, is significant for its honest portrayal of a conflict which has been written on extensively by outsiders but rarely by the people involved. A Republican of some standing, his writings have been criticized by many who feel that the Irish Republican voice should not be heard. This is perhaps the first time that a modern Irish Republican has attempted to show in novel form what his community has gone through under British oppression. The writing is at times slightly awkward--it is a first novel as I said--but it is refreshing honest and sincere. A good examination of politics and general human concerns.

Putting aside all personal views on the troubles...

...as apparently many others are not able to do. I would like to offer my opinion of Danny Morrison's first effort at writing a novel. Mr. Morrison makes a good effort with this, his first novel. It is a very honest portrayal, which stems from his own biased foundation. No attempt is made to hide his personal, political leanings or to disguise his emotional involvement in this book.
I found this biased foundation quite refreshing. I appreciated the honest opinion, of a man who lived one side of, "The Troubles." This is a book field that is flooded with outsiders writing what they refer to as their "unbiased view," when actually they are simply well disguised yet still highly biased in their foundation.
The writing is not the greatest I've ever seen, but it is far from the worst. You have to take this book at its face value, a personal account - in novel form - of a life in Belfast. I give it 3 stars because it was a compelling read but the writing trips you up on many occasions, breaking up the flow and almost forcing you to re-read sentences with a "what was that??" effect.

Republican History of Northern Irish Troubles in a novel

West Belfast is a book of the rise of a young man from street-fighting to full-scale terrorism. If you are interested in a very, very biased Republican (i.e. Sinn Fein) view of the beginning of the troubles, buy this book from a well-known, once convicted Sinn Fein spokesperson. For a much better novel with a similar scope (but less republican, more catholic) buy Maddens One by One in the Darkness. If you want to read the ultimate novel on Northern Ireland, read McLiam Wilsons Eureka Street.
