This early work by Richard Harding Davis was originally published in 1899 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'The Lion and the Unicorn' is a collection of short stories that include 'The Vagrant', 'On the Fever Ship', and 'The Last Ride Together'. Davis attended Lehigh University and Johns Hopkins University, but was asked to leave both due to neglecting his studies in favour socialising. During the Second Boer War in South Africa, Davis was a leading correspondent of the conflict. He saw the war first-hand from both parties perspectives and documented it in his publication 'With Both Armies' (1900). He wrote widely from locations such as the Caribbean, Central America, and even from the perspective of the Japanese forces during the Russo-Japanese War. Davis died following a heart attack on 11th April, 1916, at the age of 51.

He is the master of this genre...

Any one of these four stories individually would be worth the price of the entire book. I'm a big fan of the author who has a great talent for providing a feast of adventure, intrigue, and all manner of sordid and seedy plots lurking beneath the glittering pillars of the Capitol building.

Richard Harding Davis was not only an excellent novelist but also one of the best reporters of all time. He clearly drew from the immense experience he'd gained from traveling the globe and being at the center of history and politics when he wrote his outstanding novels. As a war correspondent he had seen his share of action and adventure, so when he penned his works in the action/adventure genre, he was truly following the adage, "write what you know." His fictional works are so realistic, because he did not have to research the situations he wrote about; he lived them.

This book will take you on a thrilling ride that you won't forget. His wonderfully descriptive prose makes you feel like you're actually there, and his characters are so lifelike you feel like they could stroll into the room at any moment.

You will be shocked, horrified, and scandalized, not only by these tales, but by how convincingly realistic they are. I strongly recommend this book and all of Richard Harding Davis' other works. He is the master of this genre.

The stories are brilliant and the style is great.
By Always with an open mind
I have read some of Davis' other books, and I'm very impressed by the range he shows in his works. He wrote a romantic war story that made me cry when I read it, and here he has written 4 thrilling and terrifying adventures that had me biting my nails. These are excellently written stories that you won't be able to stop thinking about long after you've read the last page. They are as brilliant as they are chilling.

One thing I really love about his works is that his prose is wonderful. His writing just flows across the page, and reading it is a very enjoyable experience. I can't recommend this book enough. The stories are brilliant and the style is great.

Take a look inside the mind of a storyteller

In a long life fraught with peril of varying degrees, Tristan MacAvery has had a number of odd experiences, which to say they are odd in the sense that few other people experience them, and then have the courage to tell everyone else about them. From being a professional voice actor to being attacked by a religious icon, Mr. MacAvery has led the sort of life most people only dream of in moments of fevered delerium. The tales of these mysterious happenstances are told with a good ol'-fashioned type of homespun humor that at once welcomes the reader, sets them at ease, and let's them know they are in for a ride. In all fairness I must state that it is unfair to struggling authors to divulge the contents of their books in any great detail, hence this review is deliberately vague. If you dare to take the road less traveled however, then you'll likely enjoy the road that winds through this book, giving the gentle reader glimpses of an extraordinary mind. Pleasant journey!

About the Author
James Hanna wandered Australia for seven years before settling on a career in criminal justice. He spent twenty years as a counselor in the Indiana Department of Corrections and has recently retired from the San Francisco Probation Department, where he was assigned to a domestic violence and stalking unit. James’ short stories have appeared in Old Crow Review, Sandhills Review, Edge City Review, Fault Zone, Eclipse, The Literary Review, Red Savina Review, The California Writers Club Literary Review, Zymbol, The Sand Hill Review, and Empty Sink Publishing, which has serialized some of the Pomeroy stories. Three of James’ stories were nominated for the Pushcart Prize. James’ first published novel, The Siege, depicts a hostage standoff in a penal facility. It is available on Amazon in both print and Kindle versions. Call Me Pomeroy is James’ second published book.

Call me captivated

A few years back, while doing some home electrical repair, I touched a live wire and, following an eye-opening jolt of unregulated juice, found myself lying in the middle of the floor, counting stars. The goofy part was, I enjoyed it.

James Hanna’s Call Me Pomeroy had the same effect on me.

Two or three pages into the first chapter, I knew I was in for something special. Something electrifying. And I got it.

Pomeroy is a collection of connected short stories whose anti-hero, Eddie Beasely (Pomeroy) pursues a delusional dream to become an internationally-famous rock star. Part brawler, part braggart, and part poetry-quoting barbarian, Pomeroy is an enfant terrible of the new order. A big throbbing cock-of-the-walk whose naked ambition rivals that of Jay Gatsby, and whose dumb luck trumps the fortunes of even Forrest Gump.

Two obstacles stand between the would-be singer/songwriter and everlasting fame. First he’s a parolee, just out of the joint, and second, his talent is, well, let’s be generous and call it raw. But these are petty concerns for a man of Pomeroy’s towering vision, and he quickly brushes them aside becoming an accidental hero of the Occupy movement and an overnight musical sensation.

Fame? Infamy? It’s all exposure, and to this opportunist ex-con, any exposure is good. Happily embracing whatever battles come his way—and there are plenty, to be sure—Pomeroy watches his legend grow as quickly as his prodigious arrest record. One day he’s a small time west coast agitator with a guitar, the next he’s a bad-boy celebrity living in Paris, negotiating a music contract.

The stories in this lovely collection are strung together by a narrative line that crackles like a burning fuse, inching toward a big wooden powder keg with the word DYNAMITE on it. But the fun part—the nasty, naughty, rub-your-hands-together-with-glee part—is that, instead of hoping for Dudley Do-Right to come along and snuff it out, you find yourself covering your ears and snickering, waiting for the whole thing to blow.

To say Eddie “Pomeroy” Beasley speaks to the greedy, bomb-throwing, sex deviant in all of us may be true. But we like him just the same. Why? Because his bare-knuckle honesty is frightfully on the mark.

Call Me Pomeroy is the anarchist’s last laugh at the bulls*** middle-class power structure that smugly believes it’s already gotten the best of us. It is a fart in the scuba-tank of institutional decorum. A bawdy, brawling, middle finger to the vapidity of modern civilization. In short, this compact, tightly-written book is high-voltage entertainment that shocks the senses and leaves you seeing stars.

`Pomeroy don't ride on the Hershey Highway.'

James Hanna's biography reads as interesting as a novel! He grew up in South America, the Middle East and Europe (his father was a Foreign Service officer), and then settled in the United States at age 16. And to quote his fascinating bio from his website, ` By the time he was 21, he was bored by what he considered to be the relative callowness of American culture. Feeling like a prisoner of the American Dream, he left college after his sophomore year and caught a tramp freighter to Australia where he spent seven years roaming the continent. While in Australia, James worked as a cowboy, sheep drover, carnival barker, migrant worker, and deckhand. He always carried a bag of books and educated himself by reading the classics. On returning from Australia, he volunteered for a two-year stint in the Army, acquiring a master's degree in criminology after his discharge in 1976. For the twenty years that followed, he was a counselor in a medium security prison near the small town of Plainfield, Indiana. Fifteen years ago, he relocated to the San Francisco Bay area with his wife and is presently working as a probation officer in San Francisco.' His debut novel, THE SEIGE, remains one this reviewer's favorite books of last year's vintage, and superb as that novel was, it doesn't give a clue to what awaits the reader in CALL ME POMEROY.

Where James Hanna absorbed his comedic talent, given his background as outlined above, is a mystery. But that is all the more reason to applaud this sensationally hilarious creature he has created in Pomeroy. There are so many hundreds of quotations that could be shared except that most of them deal with sex, genitalia of both men and women, coarse concepts and braggadocio of the sort that is not allowed in reviews here. Suffice it to say that James has created a character in Pomeroy that is destined to become talked about and work its way into permanent iconography of contemporary literature. Pomeroy - how do we describe him fairly? - is an ex-con who is tall, apparently generously endowed, thinks every member of the feminine gender craves his talent, writes poems and sings on the streets and makes his way into and out of trouble with both the police and thugs in his travels from San Francisco and Oakland to London and Ireland and Paris, strumming his lethal guitar and deftly moving in and out of trouble. His mouth crackers out more potty language than about anyone on paper, and yet despite all of his rather constant noise and derring-do, we like him. You just must like him because he is everything our id screams and our inhibitions bury. He is a stroke of genius and James Hanna steps into the arena of comedic writers with huge boots. An anti-hero you can love

There’s no shortage of flawed and potentially unlikeable heroes these days in movies and books. Edward Beasley, who asks the world to call him Pomeroy, is no exception. Recently paroled, with serious delusions of grandeur and a nascent songwriting career apparent only to him, he takes Oakland, California by storm at the peak of the Occupy Oakland movement in the first of his adventures. In and out of jail, he relishes meetings with his attractive Hispanic parole officer. His second escapade involves hijacking a ferryboat. Then he takes his curious brand of activism and self-absorbed reflection across the pond to London, in the belief that he’s going to sign a recording contract with Apple Records.

With laugh-out-loud-funny lines that I won’t repeat here and a—ahem—unique view of the world, Pomeroy will keep you reading (and laughing). If you’re in the mood for some seriously politically incorrect and uproariously funny writing, “Call Me Pomeroy” fits the bill.

(Full disclosure: I was privileged to participate in Open Mic readings with the author, James Hanna, organized through the SF Peninsula Branch of the California Writer's Club, and even did a couple of stints portraying Pomeroy's parole agent, Jessica Jimenez. That experience did not diminish my enjoyment as I read the book, which I received as a review copy.)

Seriously FUNNY Entertainment for Smart People

For the first 200 words or so I was thinking: Oh, no, this is just too contrived and pretentiously silly. It's trying WAY too hard.

Then ... It got me.

Got seriously FUNNY. In a smart way. And wouldn't let go. Every page-turn is a twist.

Better than most movies. Good medicine. Day later I'm still chuckling. Same thing's going to happen to you. And it's only a buck...

The real problem I have with it? It doesn't last as long as a movie. You'll race through this in about 45 minutes. But I bet it sticks to your funny bone for days.

Thank you, Mr.Ashworth. Keep 'em coming.

Ashworth has thrown us a curve ball in this quick piece of bright fiction. I found this story shocking, then enraging, shocking again, and then totally surprising! Ashworth reminds us that in a world where anything seems possible old traditions still grit the cogs and pull us down into ancient human patterning. Mothers are still mothers and romance is still romance. Sort of. This is the best kind of satire: crisp, quirky, and hilarious.

A dark, yet timeless teen story

A fantastic read, especially for people in their early 20s who have graduated high school recently. Having graduated high school four years ago I was able to not only laugh at certain passages because they were so relatable to my own ridiculous behavior as a teen but also see with a fresh perspective just how dangerous teenage fads can be. The theme of fads is very effective due to the satirical & exaggerated way it is presented. Personally I also really enjoyed the darkness of the book -- I'm a huge fan of anything dark or creepy, so those aspects kept me hooked. The book feels very timeless -- although it is clearly written in the age of millenials, the themes and the actions of the characters are consistent with teenagers from every decade. Although quite different in content this factor lends the book the same timeless appeal as a book like Salinger's Catcher in the Rye or movies like Fast Times at Ridgemont High and American Graffiti. The author's tone and the mood he sets gives the book the perfect atmosphere of a suburban high school town where not much is going on -- this is especially effective in the first party scene. This aspect reminded me a lot of one of my favorite more modern movies, Gia Coppola's Palo Alto. The Crowd and the Merrimack would make a great movie! Overall an excellent book that is a quick & easy read because of its gripping plot. Would recommend to anyone.

Fond memories through dark paths.

Author Bryce Ian is sure to bring back some fond, cherishing memories of school days for his readers. 'The Crowd and the Merrimack' turns from light-hearted read into a suspenseful dark tale with a twist as the narration goes down further with the life of our teenage high school student Conrad O' Connor, who is nonchalant or acts as he is to show the insouciant behavior as many teenagers do to act 'cool' until his easy-happy daily school life is stirred by the inexpressible behavior of his few classmates.
Author Bryce Ian has very artistically touched a very sensitive subject of teenage student's school life and very well portrayed their mood swings and feelings which are far from the logical reasoning of adulthood. Though we all have been through the phase of teenage fascinations and fads but somewhere at some point we all fail to understand and lend a helping hand at solving their problem which can sometimes mislead and make them do damage which can never be corrected.
Last but not the least 'The Crowd and the Merrimack' is a short, entertaining read which, very well depicts the high school life from the perspective of a young student giving its readers the visualistic glimpse of their once fresh, charming past. This novel is bound to take its readers down the fond memory lane, through the dark paths of Conrad's life. Highly recommended.

Everyone should read this! So relevant and poignant!

"I feel I might die tonight," Conrad O'Connor considers in the opening line of this deeply poignant, grisly yet uplifting, tale. A beautifully crafted story, The Crowd and the Merrimack cuts straight to the cynic in all of us. While reading, I found myself completely immersed in the lives of Conrad and his classmates. This is a story to which so many can relate through the author's subtle but meticulous exploration of the pervasive threat of conformity - the extent to which the fear of being exposed as a fraud or deviant may drive individuals. A nuanced work, The Crowd and the Merrimack divulges the pernicious nature and ramifications of passing trends and societal pressures in a satirical fashion.

I highly recommend this book! It is a story that will stick with you and leave you reflecting on your own experiences, as well as the wider societal structures that underlie issues around conformity and deviance, especially in high school. OMG! This 3rd installment by the remarkably brilliant author is killing me with another cliffhanger :o LOL ... Having to wait between each of the five incredible parts in this serial novel is driving me crazy! :) Did I mention that patience is NOT one of my virtues? :o LOL ... Another phenomenal, contemporary romantic suspense read at it's best with powerfully crafted words to continue this unique & spellbinding story! ... Fresh, hot & steamy love scenes continue with well defined characters that you will love or hate and keep the reader engaged & the pages turning! ... Be prepared for cliffhangers at the end of each part, though it is well worth the wait, or you can wait until you have all 5 stories to read consecutively :) ... Yes, I was given this to read in exchange for an honest review, but I honestly do love each & every book in this series that I've read!

About the Author

John R. Perrotta is a University of Miami graduate and a lifelong horseman with extensive experience in thoroughbred racing and breeding. As one of the first professional racing managers in the United States, he spent the late seventies coordinating business affairs for John Forbes Stable, one of the country’s leading barns. In 1981 he became the general manager of Due Process Stables, where he developed a fifteen-year career racing over forty-five champions and individual stakes winners and breeding the two-time Eclipse Award winner Open Mind. Perrotta continued to race multiple stakes winners through his Star Stable and was co-breeder of the 1996 Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Touch Gold.

Perrotta was the creator, president, and executive producer of the Thoroughbred Racing Radio Network (TRRN), which is the leading radio and Internet outlet for information regarding thoroughbred racing. He now lives in Los Angeles, where he is a screenwriter, producer, and consultant on entertainment properties set in the horse racing world.

Surprisingly enjoyable and fast like the horses...

This was a surprisingly enjoyable insider's look at one of America's mini-cultures, one that most of us have only known at a distance via Kentucky Derby days, musicals like "Guys and Dolls" and films like "Let It Ride". Growing up in New York City, Aqueduct Racetrack was the place where that big flea market was and Saratoga was the place to see Bruce Springsteen and the Moody Blues. Yet, right next door was a whole other world populated with a colorful collection of "grifters and gamblers..." and hardworking jockeys and trainers and people who love and are fascinated by those beautiful thoroughbreds. Unlike many of the other reviewers, I am not a trackaholic, but I am not a total novice either. I had a friend who definitely is a racetracker, and when Mr. Perrotta talks about his early experiences with his grandfather and the races, it was very much deja vu. This was very much a fun read, lighthearted and anecdotal, yet full of interesting facts and lore. I especially found interesting the differences between European (Irish) racing and American racing and the track surfaces. Relax and enjoy!

We have all known real "characters" in everyday life but John takes a reader up close and personal with many of those racetrack

While "Racetracker" may be most appealing to those of us that have been part of an infectious business that grabs a person and never seems to let go, the fact of the matter is that John Perrotta's work has universal appeal. We have all known real "characters" in everyday life but John takes a reader up close and personal with many of those racetrack "characters" whose lives have crossed paths with his and he does it in a manner that gives the reader a sense of what it was truly like to be there at the various times and places he details. John writes with first hand experience about people from every strata of the racing world and his book mirrors that fact in that it will appeal to many different types of individuals, whether they are "racetrackers" or not.

Johnny P is a real race tracker.

One of the few things that I retained from my grade school nuns was Sister Mary's description of sacred scripture, "it was written so a mouse could wade in it and an elephant could swim in it." Having known Johnny P for thirty some years of his life with grifters and gamblers I feel confident in saying what a wonderful job he did in his recount of life as a race tracker. Whether you are a hardened lifer, or a mere novice, you will marvel in the glamorous, exciting, and always unpredictable life of a racetracker. Great job, John. I'd say you're live in the late double!
