The best book by a radio presenter that I have read so far.

Avid listeners to Nick Abbot's radio programmes will be familiar with his confession of being more of a television addict despite knowing that he should really apply himself to some constructive/intellectual pursuit. Nick was a psychology student before getting into radio, and openly describes his area of academia as being a "study of the bloody obvious" and a course that anyone could pass (I concur).
American radio has shaped that of the UK dramatically, not to say that it doesn't have its own batch of shock jocks. Nick Abbot, however, is a torch bearer for American broadcasting legends, namely Neil Rogers whom he confesses to having emulated since his time at Virgin 104.5. I believe that the student has far exceeded the master in regards to style, vivid "off the cuff" monologues, and in later years vast content and media awareness; nobody on British radio is as outspoken or adopts this against the grain style. He is a shock jock, but not thoughtlessly spiteful; he will engage in verbal fencing match with those who are deserving.
Nick is the good kind of TV addict in that he shows breadth as well as depth - and he goes into hillarious detail about people who are on the other side of the fence, the Limbaugh-ian "low information voters".
I'm a broadcaster with a modicum of talent and at the time of purchasing this bought, okay, because it's Nick, but rather the level of craft that is evident in everything that he does (little tidbit here, Nick's father listens critically to his shows and gives him feedback, picking up on every minor flaw, a habit that maybe just maybe would generate this kind of reflex in his offspring). I'm more lighting my cigarette on the broadcasting torch than hoping to bear it, and collection of media critique and social commentary is excellent material for those of us who can't be bothered to watch newsnight and haven't bought a paper of the informed news variety since we shed our last layer of acne.
The low price caused me to overlook the detail that this is a collection of columns and blog posts rather than a book that has been written solely to go into print, but I would have bought this anyway due to the low price and will definitely read the previous collections once I've finished.
