Pomeroy, a towering street musician on parole, is out of the clink for the upteenth time and wants to become another Bob Dylan. With fame and fortune in mind, he heads to Occupy Oakland, hoping to get on television, attract an agent, and score a million dollar contract for Ants in My Pants, his marathon ditty. Pomeroy is a skirmish-loving, dumpster-diving, narcissistic crazy who thinks he can sing like Pavarotti and that all women want to jump his bones. His parole officer, a street-smart Hispanic woman, tells Pomeroy to quit looking at her alligator pumps and to get himself a real plan. But Pomeroy has schemes of his own and more wisdom than we’d like to admit. You may find his egocentric opinions politically incorrect. (“There ain’t a dyke alive ol’ Pomeroy can’t turn straight.”) You may find yourself laughing when you shouldn’t. (“A good strong piss is better ’an sex. Lasts longer too.”). About the Author
James Hanna wandered Australia for seven years before settling on a career in criminal justice. He spent twenty years as a counselor in the Indiana Department of Corrections and has recently retired from the San Francisco Probation Department, where he was assigned to a domestic violence and stalking unit. James’ short stories have appeared in Old Crow Review, Sandhills Review, Edge City Review, Fault Zone, Eclipse, The Literary Review, Red Savina Review, The California Writers Club Literary Review, Zymbol, The Sand Hill Review, and Empty Sink Publishing, which has serialized some of the Pomeroy stories. Three of James’ stories were nominated for the Pushcart Prize. James’ first published novel, The Siege, depicts a hostage standoff in a penal facility. It is available on Amazon in both print and Kindle versions. Call Me Pomeroy is James’ second published book.

Call me captivated

A few years back, while doing some home electrical repair, I touched a live wire and, following an eye-opening jolt of unregulated juice, found myself lying in the middle of the floor, counting stars. The goofy part was, I enjoyed it.
James Hanna’s Call Me Pomeroy had the same effect on me.
Two or three pages into the first chapter, I knew I was in for something special. Something electrifying. And I got it.
Pomeroy is a collection of connected short stories whose anti-hero, Eddie Beasely (Pomeroy) pursues a delusional dream to become an internationally-famous rock star. Part brawler, part braggart, and part poetry-quoting barbarian, Pomeroy is an enfant terrible of the new order. A big throbbing cock-of-the-walk whose naked ambition rivals that of Jay Gatsby, and whose dumb luck trumps the fortunes of even Forrest Gump.
Two obstacles stand between the would-be singer/songwriter and everlasting fame. First he’s a parolee, just out of the joint, and second, his talent is, well, let’s be generous and call it raw. But these are petty concerns for a man of Pomeroy’s towering vision, and he quickly brushes them aside becoming an accidental hero of the Occupy movement and an overnight musical sensation.
Fame? Infamy? It’s all exposure, and to this opportunist ex-con, any exposure is good. Happily embracing whatever battles come his way—and there are plenty, to be sure—Pomeroy watches his legend grow as quickly as his prodigious arrest record. One day he’s a small time west coast agitator with a guitar, the next he’s a bad-boy celebrity living in Paris, negotiating a music contract.
The stories in this lovely collection are strung together by a narrative line that crackles like a burning fuse, inching toward a big wooden powder keg with the word DYNAMITE on it. But the fun part—the nasty, naughty, rub-your-hands-together-with-glee part—is that, instead of hoping for Dudley Do-Right to come along and snuff it out, you find yourself covering your ears and snickering, waiting for the whole thing to blow.
To say Eddie “Pomeroy” Beasley speaks to the greedy, bomb-throwing, sex deviant in all of us may be true. But we like him just the same. Why? Because his bare-knuckle honesty is frightfully on the mark.
Call Me Pomeroy is the anarchist’s last laugh at the bulls*** middle-class power structure that smugly believes it’s already gotten the best of us. It is a fart in the scuba-tank of institutional decorum. A bawdy, brawling, middle finger to the vapidity of modern civilization. In short, this compact, tightly-written book is high-voltage entertainment that shocks the senses and leaves you seeing stars.

`Pomeroy don't ride on the Hershey Highway.'

James Hanna's biography reads as interesting as a novel! He grew up in South America, the Middle East and Europe (his father was a Foreign Service officer), and then settled in the United States at age 16. And to quote his fascinating bio from his website, ` By the time he was 21, he was bored by what he considered to be the relative callowness of American culture. Feeling like a prisoner of the American Dream, he left college after his sophomore year and caught a tramp freighter to Australia where he spent seven years roaming the continent. While in Australia, James worked as a cowboy, sheep drover, carnival barker, migrant worker, and deckhand. He always carried a bag of books and educated himself by reading the classics. On returning from Australia, he volunteered for a two-year stint in the Army, acquiring a master's degree in criminology after his discharge in 1976. For the twenty years that followed, he was a counselor in a medium security prison near the small town of Plainfield, Indiana. Fifteen years ago, he relocated to the San Francisco Bay area with his wife and is presently working as a probation officer in San Francisco.' His debut novel, THE SEIGE, remains one this reviewer's favorite books of last year's vintage, and superb as that novel was, it doesn't give a clue to what awaits the reader in CALL ME POMEROY.
Where James Hanna absorbed his comedic talent, given his background as outlined above, is a mystery. But that is all the more reason to applaud this sensationally hilarious creature he has created in Pomeroy. There are so many hundreds of quotations that could be shared except that most of them deal with sex, genitalia of both men and women, coarse concepts and braggadocio of the sort that is not allowed in reviews here. Suffice it to say that James has created a character in Pomeroy that is destined to become talked about and work its way into permanent iconography of contemporary literature. Pomeroy - how do we describe him fairly? - is an ex-con who is tall, apparently generously endowed, thinks every member of the feminine gender craves his talent, writes poems and sings on the streets and makes his way into and out of trouble with both the police and thugs in his travels from San Francisco and Oakland to London and Ireland and Paris, strumming his lethal guitar and deftly moving in and out of trouble. His mouth crackers out more potty language than about anyone on paper, and yet despite all of his rather constant noise and derring-do, we like him. You just must like him because he is everything our id screams and our inhibitions bury. He is a stroke of genius and James Hanna steps into the arena of comedic writers with huge boots. An anti-hero you can love

There’s no shortage of flawed and potentially unlikeable heroes these days in movies and books. Edward Beasley, who asks the world to call him Pomeroy, is no exception. Recently paroled, with serious delusions of grandeur and a nascent songwriting career apparent only to him, he takes Oakland, California by storm at the peak of the Occupy Oakland movement in the first of his adventures. In and out of jail, he relishes meetings with his attractive Hispanic parole officer. His second escapade involves hijacking a ferryboat. Then he takes his curious brand of activism and self-absorbed reflection across the pond to London, in the belief that he’s going to sign a recording contract with Apple Records.
With laugh-out-loud-funny lines that I won’t repeat here and a—ahem—unique view of the world, Pomeroy will keep you reading (and laughing). If you’re in the mood for some seriously politically incorrect and uproariously funny writing, “Call Me Pomeroy” fits the bill.
(Full disclosure: I was privileged to participate in Open Mic readings with the author, James Hanna, organized through the SF Peninsula Branch of the California Writer's Club, and even did a couple of stints portraying Pomeroy's parole agent, Jessica Jimenez. That experience did not diminish my enjoyment as I read the book, which I received as a review copy.)
