Exactly what I was hoping for!

I'm pretty picky when it comes to what horror I read, but the cover of this book grabbed my attention and wouldn't let go. I thought "What the hell?" and grabbed it. From the first story, Bug Boy, Kurtz had me hooked. I sure hope the "Vol. 1" is a true indication that more volumes are to come. I can't wait!!

Great Fast and Creepy Read

This is a compilation of a bunch of short stories all by the same author, so if you're looking to stick around with the same character and watch him/her grow, then this is not the format for you. But if you want to get through some creepy stories before bed, then it's great! There's a bunch of stories with various characters of various ages, genders, etc, so everything is fresh! Some have crazy twists, some are dark and you know where the darkness is going and can only follow along in terror. It's not a terribly long book either. You can breeze through it quickly. The font is a nice sans serif that you're used to seeing on a screen, meaning a digital version is probably easy on the eyes (I got a physical copy, but looked at the first few pages online). The writing style is informal, almost conversational at times, so it's not heavy and filled with words you have to look up. It also makes visualizing the settings easy and engaging. There's a few grammatical errors, but I think the writer self-edits so it's natural not to pick up on all of one's own misspellings. The pace of the stories is fast (that's the nature of a short story), and can keep you well entertained for the duration of a tale.
If you like creepypastas and spooky stories then I recommend this book! Remember to read it alone at night :)

This Monkey Shines

From giant parasites, to classic closet monsters, to children baiting pedophiles, Matt Kurtz's collection of horror yarns is bound to chill the marrow of even the most time-worn fan of frights. Gathering twelve of his best short stories which had previously been published in various anthologies and magazines, this book offers a collection of Kurtz's work on its own for the first time (and not the last, seeing how he has three more on the way). This first volume of Monkey's Box of Horrors entertained me and kept me going, leaping to the next story on the heels of one just finished. The collection is a great throwback to the heyday of horror short stories, conjuring up fond memories of curling up with Stephen King's Night Shift and Clive Barker's Books of Blood. Sometimes Kurtz's creepy creatures are classic in style, but he always finds a unique spin and makes sure they leave no nerve unscarred . This is a solid debut from a talent I think we're only going to see darkly germinate from here on in, and I, for one, am along for the ride into the Monkey's liar.
