This collection of short stories draws you in and doesn't let you go until you've finished reading the last page. DeBrincat's voice is thoughtful and strikingly unique, and each story weaves a world of intense characters and fresh situations. Each story feels fresh, thoughtful, and unexpected. A wonderful read - I highly recommend it.

That big? No, that dirty.

Tracy DeBrincat's characters are people of the earth, the kind who will comment not on ideas, but appreciate bodily processes as something to which one should pay attention. Her stories take readers to a perhaps uncomfortable place we thought we left behind when we became "adults." I still remember a joke my uncle told me when I was a kid: two woman are hoeing potatoes in the field when one woman pulls a potato from the ground, looks at it, and says, "This looks like my Issac's taters." The other woman responds, "That big?" and the first says, "No, that dirty." Ha ha ha, right? Where did this "low-brow" humor go, and why did we once like it so much? I loved that joke. DeBrincat reminds me why.

Solid and accurate, but not fully up-to-date or exhaustive (e.g. there's nothing on guild wars). As the title suggests, it delivers helpful tips, but the advice is fairly generic and you can find similar for free already. Still was worth the purchase just to have it all compiled in one place, saves some work.

OMG! Another Awesome Must Read in a Fabulous Series!

Always a 5 star must read from this amazing author! ... Part 2 was just as awesome as Part 1 :) ... It makes no difference that I was given this to read in exchange for an honest review, I am truly addicted!!...I knew this was the 2nd of a 5 part saga, but I will be going crazy until I can get my hands on each of the next parts :o LOL ... So be prepared for a cliffhanger, but Ms. Clark always makes it worth the wait :) ... This serial novel is contemporary romantic suspense at it's best :) ... With sexy characters you will love or love to hate, plus hot & steamy scenes!! ... Each novella's book grabbed me by the throat right from the beginning! ... I did not want to stop or put down my kindle & read this in 2 sittings! ... There are plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged and the pages turning!! ... I still don't know exactly who the villain is yet and may not know until the end of this series :o LOL ... You really need to add this to your Wish list or One-click each part now! ... Don't miss out on these amazing reads!!

Lori has me chomping for book 3 now that she left us at another big cliff hanger. Keep writing, Lori, I love your books. Charles Portis would have loved it!

This book is not flawless but it is very, very entertaining. I predict it will be a movie and will win an Oscar or two. Perhaps the casual reader would not like it as much as I. But anyone who really likes books, authors,etc would LOVE this book. If you work or hang out at a library or are a wannabe author or a author you can't help but enjoy this work. As I write this only a hand full of other reviews have been written. I don't know if all of them missed the obvious or avoided mentioning it as a spoiler but the two writers in the book are obviously Salinger and Michener. I will not use the cliche "thinly veiled" because it does not apply. There is no veil at all. I enjoyed this book for the same reason I loved "true grit" when I read it 40 years ago. It is funny, short, snarky and cynical as hell. Which means it rings true. Pitch perfect for the subject matter. The term is overused but it is a genuine page turner. You have to suspend your disbelief for what, at least to me, are two minor things. First that a lookalike just happened to be on the same Plane as one of the writers and second that one of the authors successfully sued the other when as far as I could tell the suit had zero merit. (The criticism of his work, i.e. it was mostly overlong cut and paste travelogues is patently true--IMO). Self deprecation is always good when handled right and here it is masterful. The fella who wrote the book is the director of the Actual program lampooned in the book---Or it's twin brother. (I did not know this until the end when I read his bio on the back flap). The sad humor of wannabe writers starving for praise is done is such a believable and obviously knowing way that the above mentioned "coincidences" are easy to eat and digest. One of the other things that some will criticize is that the main charterer is not likable enough. I say poppycock. Every other novel I read these days has a lead character who was a college football star and half of those at USC. No one calls this guy "streak" and he is not, nor does he pretend to be a hero. This guy has a background you can believe and he has some real flaws. But the author does not give in to the easy cliches like putting him in bed with young adoring female students who would have obviously been easy just to spice it up. To me, the fact that he avoids this sort of thing does make him likable. In a word I believed this guy. I must admit the fact that military service mandated that I spend half my life in the Northeast and the other half in Central Texas provided me with a great background to understand and appreciate a novel that swims in both those waters. This would be a perfect comeback movie for Joe Pechi. I predict he will get the Oscar for it. The only other Oscar prediction I ever made upon finishing a book was the gal in "Cold Mountain" and Zellwiger did get the Oscar for it so I am one for one. It has been a very long time since I have read a book and thought, "Damn, I wish I had written that". I highly recommend this book to anyone who ever thought about writing a book or anyone who likes "smart" novels.

A good fast read

The reviews promised a satire on creative writing programs, but I thought as a satire it lacked teeth. The creative writing group came across as, well, a creative writing group, with nothing very distinctive about them. I did enjoy the laid-back, wise-cracking style; the narrator's voice is the best thing about the novel. The plot, of course, is very far-fetched, but you don't expect absolute realism from what is in effect a crime caper with some literary in-jokes thrown in. The central relationship, between the real writer and the fake, doesn't altogether ring true, or rather, seems a bit out of focus, as if the author couldn't quite decide how to play it. I think we're meant to see the narrator as basically a decent guy with a criminal streak, but at times he comes across as just a heel. But the whole thing moves at a cracking pace, and makes for a very enjoyable few hours of reading. Excellent in-flight reading, I'd say.

A confidence man running from the mob gets mistaken for a famous novelist who's a cross between Vonnegut and Salinger. By the end of the book, you'll be questioning whether your college professors were are smart as you thought they were. A funny and intelligent read.

My name is Alan Parks and I decided to write my book, Seriously Mum, What's an Alpaca? after being told by friends that our story (Lorna and I) would make an interesting read. It is now over six years since we first left our beautiful home just outside Brighton, and although we have experienced some hard times here, every day we grow to love it more. In fact we can't think of anywhere we would rather live. Ok, yes, the summers are as hot as can be, and the winters bone-chillingly cold, but our life here has taught us many new things about ourselves and each other. Since the book was published, I had so many people write to me asking how the animals were now, and were we happy living in Spain that I have now written two more books in the series, Seriously Mum, Where's that Donkey? and Seriously Mum, How Many Cats? I have just started work on book 4 in the series.

Very enjoyable third book in the series

The third book in this wonderful series. I had to read this slowly to savour it because I knew that it would be the last in the series for a while - hopefully there will be others! Thankfully, I was able to read this instalment fairly soon after reading the first two, so didn't have to suffer waiting too long to read more.
This latest in the series finds Alan, Lorna and their wonderful menagerie still living at the Olive Mill in Andalucia, six years after buying the property. This time though, there is an increase in the cat population in and around the mill.
Without giving too much away, the ups and downs and anecdotes about the cats and kittens featured in the book are very entertaining and mostly humerous but written with honesty by Alan. I really enjoyed Alan's style of writing. Have loved all the books in the series and really hope there are more. Highly recommended. The Olive Mill is now for sale though because of a need for a property with more land. So who knows what might transpire next...

Cats, alpaca's and dogs, the Parks don't seem to have a good handle on their animal husbandry, or their literary skills.

Seriously Mum, How Many Cats. I ended up getting mad at Alan and Lorna around the cat issue. Of course the cats will continue to reproduce if they aren't spayed and neutered, they will continue to fight with each other, carry diseases to their kittens and continue to cause mayhem in ever increasing numbers. To refer to them as "ferals" and not taking any action to care for them is criminal. Cats make amazing pets and should be treated as the very useful, helpful and adorable creatures they are and can be, not just be "feral."

Another winner!

This is Alan Parks' third book telling of his new life in Spain. Alan and Lorna arrived in Spain in 2008. This book begins in 2014 and then looks back. It starts with a good intro, not too long, straight to the point, quickly recaps a few pointers from their previous years at the Olive Mill. This is where Alan wins with his books-he's not afraid to be very sentimental, show his feelings so you feel everything and become deeply involved in it all as you read. It's really humbling how other people deal with things. Memories, his dad's illness, then, totally unexpected-his dad seems to have a serious illness-not long to live perhaps and suddenly he leaves mum, another woman involved. That's Alan, always understanding and patient, that's how he comes across: in book one I remember thinking he had the patience of a saint. Next we have a touch of humour. Then, gosh, serious stuff. This is his third book and still I'm learning something new about his life I didn't already know. Powerful writing about his family situation, his dad's illness and transplants, really gets at your emotions. For a man to be able to do this in his writing, it's unusual. Here's the sensitive side, particularly poignant from a guy. Alan's writing is really moving. Alan talks about how (in theory) it's easy to breed alpacas and some of the things that happen in this process. The sort of tasks Alan has to do-helping on the alpaca romance! After the first moving chapter, this one about helping the alpacas 'have it' is more light hearted. I had a few chuckles while I was reading this. Alpaca tackle! Alpacas sit down to have it?? There's the recalling of events in the animal's voices-same technique as in his first book. Alan and Lorna do love the Olive Mill and if things had turned out differently they would have stayed but they realise it's time to move on and are intending selling it. It's not something sudden, they've been trying to sell the olive mill for a couple of years and up to now no offers. What a nice easy, concise, conversational style, lots of info and he keeps it really interesting. Yikes-gnasher problems! Ah, he's so considerate and thoughtful. This is great!!!!!!! Not just about the animals, there's some al fresco dental work going on! Told so well, I can't put it down. We learn about the different ways of celebrating in Spain eg Easter. Lovely description of Diego's house. Hilarious comment re alpaca romance aftermath! Alpaca shearing. Cats and more cats and some fantastic names for them. Alan is going to the UK for the first time in five years. Action packed-ONLY for a weekend! A family do and a football tournament. Pink suitcase? Sad moments, awkward guests and pool problems. There were so many passages in this book that I just wanted to read, it was very late, I'd come to the end of the previous chapter but, as soon as I saw the next snippet, I just had to go on! Fascinating reading about the cria birth. Upsetting reading about the poor little cria's suffering eg eyes. Tear-jerking stuff. Now, I know what happens but even so, this scene is so well expressed that I can't help but be affected. Very moving. Very moving and uplifting later too. I love how it's rounded off-yet there's the possibility of another story to come! Alan Parks-you've done it again-another winner!

He has lived in Santa Monica, Chicago, Memphis, Atlanta, Baltimore, New York and London England. More fun than a barrel of monkeys...

This book demonstrates quite clearly that if people in the South were prohibited from using similes and metaphors, they would be unable to speak. I grew up in the South and found many of these witticisms new to me. That shows that Southern figures of speech can be unique to a peculiar region or even within families. This book, although a bit bawdy at times, is entertaining no matter your heritage.

Sixteen years ago, long before I moved down South myself, I came to visit with friends in Mississippi. One of them had relocated from Long Island, NY, and he often shared the "Southern-isms" he had picked up since his own migration and marriage several years earlier. They were always interesting or entertaining, but sometimes I would laugh and express my doubt that people "really say those things." By turns some were profound (once you thought about them), more often they were funny, and frequently they would just plain startle me into laughter.

Well, I've learned since I moved here two years ago -- people really do say those things, and they are even more profound, or funny, or startling when you actually know the players! Tim Heaton has captured all the sayings my friend had shared, and hundreds more! The book is just plain a fun read. You can peruse it by category ("Let's Chew the Fat".... "Wisdom of the Ages"... "I'm Glad You Asked"... and more) or just do as I did -- pick it up and flip to any page, you're sure to find something that tickles your fancy. Two of my new faves: "Don't worry about the mule going blind, just load the wagon" and "Slap some bacon on biscuit - we're burning daylight."

Highly recommended -- enjoy the read!

We do talk funny!

Loved it! Just what I was looking for. Lots of expressions that I had forgotten . Funny-just the way we talk. Love being from the South!
