About the Author
David Keyes was born on an island in the Adriatic Sea, but was raised in a suburb of Toronto. His career in the arts spans almost 30 years and includes musical works for dance, film and stage, literary pursuits, art happenings, curatorships, coffin making, fashion and film.

Dreaming Jewels

There is a dreamy unearthly quality to all the short stories in this excellent collection, and it is no more apparent than in the first story, "The House of Sleep." The narrator of this tale gives the reader fair warning that all the members of his family are narcoleptic, liable to fall asleep and start dreaming at any moment. Also, his sister tells him she is writing a book about their dreaming family. Indeed, this story may be that book, and the narrator might be part of his sister's dream, her part of his, or them both part of someone else's. Many of the other characters, especially their animal-spirit neighbors (the use of single letters from their names gives the work a charming 19th century texture), may also be dreams, or dreaming themselves. The exploration of layer after layer of reality, each more surreal than the last, gives all the stories a dreamlike cast. As is common in dreams, we tend to accept even the most outlandish imagery or situation as thoroughly real. A house exists in timeless mist, ghosts wander empty halls, the dead speak to the living, and dark forces lurk in the ocean deeps, never far away. Those looking for ghost stories, however, horror tales or even the fantasy of magic realism might be disappointed, for the tales ignore, and even transcend, the rigid and artificial genre conventions that drive and define modern publishing. The stories in this collection will entrance you like intricately carved multifaceted jewels, and will haunt you long after you close the cover, like a vivid dream which flees and the dawning but is never quite forgot.

Beautiful and strange

I've loved David Keyes' work for years. This new short story collection is beautifully written, sad, strange, and amusing by turns. Even with the heartbreak and sadness that underlies many of these stories, he conjures up a world of magic and mystery that still seems like a place I'd love to live.
