Dark and twisted, yet playful and entertaining.

This was a fun book, and very clever. Stories about bad cops and redeemable crooks, killers and victims, aliens, boxers, and cowboys. The author disrobes the secret self we hide in the basement, the appetites and fears we pretend don't exist, the murderer we might become. These stories pick up mossy stones from the reader's imagination to reveal the sinister creatures that writhe within each human heart. Like I said, it was a fun read.
Each story surprised me in some way, often with a plot twist but sometimes by using more creative tools. I won't spoil your own surprise. Many had cool style variations; some reminded me of authors who have been dead a hundred years; others conjured a weary, hard-boiled gumshoe author from more recent times. You might hear your favorite science fiction writer one moment, then a smart alecky kid from the local Apple store a few stories later. I'm pretty sure I heard Vincent Price reading in my brain more than once. Despite the darkness, there was a lot of humor. The author clearly enjoys juggling words and phrases; I enjoyed watching him play.
These are not perky tales. Death, dismemberment, and betrayal ride shotgun with the reader every mile of the trip. It turns out the Devil can be a jolly traveling companion when he's not on duty. Just strap yourself in and keep your eyes on the road.

I really enjoyed this book....

Joel has the uncanny ability to engage the reader from the start and hold their attention throughout. The art of writing a short story is not an easy one, with it's own set of unique challenges, not the least of which is quickly developing characters and stories worth reading. Joel has done this in his first collection of short stories, and I look forward to seeing more work from him in the future.
