Sheri Staak has a BS in marketing from the University of Central Florida and has participated in programs at Thunderbird School of Global Management at the University of Michigan, the Ross School of Business, and the Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Her affiliations include the Healthcare Business Women's Association, where Sheri sits on the board for the Chicago Chapter and leads the Executive Engagement Strategy. She has held various vice president positions at The Upjohn Company, Pharmacia, and Pfizer. Sheri has mentored and groomed numerous young professionals. Her business and leadership acumen has also been used to consult with small business start-ups.
A strategic and innovative business leader, Sheri held key leadership roles at both large privately held and publicly traded global companies. She has worked with and managed more than 1,000 sales representatives in highly aggressive and competitive marketplaces in the US. By harnessing her passion for leadership and teamwork, she has become a trusted advisor and coach. She further shares her wealth of knowledge through her blog, The STAAK Report. What We Can Learn about Leadership from our Favorite TV Shows

I must admit, I was a bit skeptical at first: A book that draws upon characters from TV shows to build one's leadership capabilities? However, after reading Tune In to Wow Leadership I was pleasantly surprised. The clarity of Staak's writing, combined with practical applications, make this book a quick, entertaining, and memorable read. A business leader in her own right, Staak's Tune In to Wow Leadership is a primer in how to lead and manage not only others, but yourself.

Excellent Read. Lessons of Leadership Taken From TV to Real Life Application

It is nice to read a management book that keeps your attention, and the writing inspires you to put the action steps into action. The author guides us through her unique approach of exploring core leadership qualities through a different lens - television shows. Her use of some of our most recognizable TV shows as a backdrop, to help the reader see leadership at its best and at its worst, is brilliant! The episode recaps are intriguing. She shares practical and actionable steps, taking common leadership challenges and opportunities from perplexing to doable, with solutions for real-life application. She provides several thought-provoking examples that really "tune" you in for self-reflection and inspiration. The TV shows approach is a good one. A final note, this is more than just a management book, it is a "being the best people" interaction book. Truly refreshing.

Certainly this is a different concept: attempting to teach leadership strategies and good practice through the use of fictional television characters.
It is not such a crazy idea as it sounds, even if many of the references might not travel so far from the USA. The author has probably suffered a lot of television viewing for the sake of her art and this book. Many of the programmes – both old and new – will be known to viewers worldwide, and for the times where you don’t recognise the programme or the character you can still chow down on the leadership advice.
This reviewer was sceptical to the general concept and pleasantly surprised by its execution. Many present-day television shows have passed on by, as so much “modern television” just is not attractive. Although by taking an example from a series that was compulsive viewing as a younger person – Hill Street Blues – one can certainly see where the author is coming from with her analysis. In fact, maybe even, it makes the programmes more watchable or believable too in a very strange way, often transforming the dynamic portrayed into something totally different.
This book won’t be for everybody. Some will just not get the format or concept. Others will love it. Fortunately the book is reasonably priced and even if you don’t gel with the concept entirely, there is plenty of interesting advice and commentary that you could take away and utilise in the “real world.”
It is certainly worthy of a second look, in any case. You may even discover something new and interesting to watch on the telly and use the excuse to your partner that you are “studying leadership styles”…
