Son of the White Wolf, by Robert E. Howard

This early work by Robert E. Howard was originally published in 1936 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Son of the White Wolf' is a story in the El Borak series about a Texan gunman in early 20th Century Afghanistan. Robert Ervin Howard was born in Peaster, Texas in 1906. During his youth, his family moved between a variety of Texan boomtowns, and Howard – a bookish and somewhat introverted child – was steeped in the violent myths and legends of the Old South. At fifteen Howard began to read the pulp magazines of the day, and to write more seriously. The December 1922 issue of his high school newspaper featured two of his stories, 'Golden Hope Christmas' and 'West is West'. In 1924 he sold his first piece – a short caveman tale titled 'Spear and Fang' – for $16 to the not-yet-famous Weird Tales magazine. Howard's most famous character, Conan the Cimmerian, was a barbarian-turned-King during the Hyborian Age, a mythical period of some 12,000 years ago. Conan featured in seventeen Weird Tales stories between 1933 and 1936 which is why Howard is now regarded as having spawned the 'sword and sorcery' genre. The Conan stories have since been adapted many times, most famously in the series of films starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

ANOTHER LITTLE KNOWN HOWARD CHARACTER
By Tim Janson
The White Wolf, AKA Francis Xavier Gordon was one of Howard's lesser known characters. Not a fantasy character in the vein of Conan, Kull, or Bran Mak Morn, Gordon was one of Howard's Historical adventure heroes.
Historical adventure was one of Howards favorite genres and he created stories clearly influenced by writers such as Burroughs, Mundy, and others.
Gordon was an American adventurer who stars in several short stories taking place primarily in the middle east. Arabs were one of Howard's favorite villians, even in Conan stories where Egypt becomes Stygia.
Gordon is a hard-punching, quick-shooting character, similar I would Say to the Brendan Fraser Character in the Mummy movies. the stories take place roughly circa the 20's and 30's when these lands were still roughly untamed.
They're quick, action packed tales. If all you know about Howard is Conan, you'd do well to tray and dig up this and other books of his lesser known creations. Good stuff.

Above Average Tales of a Lesser Known Howard Character
By James Sadler
This book contains three Robert E. Howard tales: "Blood of the Gods," "The Country of the Knife," and "Son of the White Wolf." The latter two were published in 1936 following Howard's death. They are essentially desert epics featuring the character of Francis X. Gordon, an American who was known as El Borak. El Borak adventured about Kurdistan, Turkey, and Afghanistan.
The stories appear to take place fairly contemporaneously with Howard's life, even though El Borak frequently swings a pretty mean sword. Still, he also managed to carry a gun much of the time. The stories are fast paced and filled with action, typical REH work. Of course, what's typical for REH would be above average for most other writers. REH was truly the king of the pulps and produced an unbelievable amount of work in a relatively short time.
for anyone who follows REH, this is a must have. "The Country of the Knife," in particular, is a great story. Roy Thomas liked it well enough to adapt it into a Conan story.

MEDIOCRITY IN THE MIDDLE-EAST
By EMAN NEP
SON OF THE WHITE WOLF contains three stories about El Borak -- an American adventuring in the Middle-East. In general, the plotlines are pretty good, but the atmosphere and character development themselves are lacking. Perhaps with some work these could have been first-rate stories, but as they stand, here is my story-by-story lowdown: [NO SPOILERS]

BLOOD OF THE GODS takes place in Arabia, where El Borak and an enemy party are racing to reach a wizened hermit that lives in a series of caves cut into a mountain. The hermit is part of a good plot twist, but the ending of the story was rather throwaway (in a literal sense, too).

THE COUNTRY OF THE KNIFE, like the previous story, starts from the POV of someone other than El Borak. In this case the story starts in America (San Francisco, I believe) and then moves to India (implied) and starts to get more interesting once the starting character reaches Afghanistan. The scene with the auction was the highlight for me. At about 80 pages this is the longest story in this collection, but I also felt it was the least rewarding.

SON OF THE WHITE WOLF is short but sweet--my favorite of the three. Unlike the previous two stories, this one is grounded in more history, even hinting that El Borak rode with Lawrence of Arabia. Most of the story takes place in Turkish-occupied territory, but more specifically modern-day Jordan based on the "mountains of Edom" reference. The plot deals mostly with El Borak and a German spy who are caught between warring Turkish and Arab factions.

Overall, I found that all of these stories were worth reading once, but I wouldn't be interested in rereading them. The main reason for this is that Howard doesn't do a very good job of making the reader feel like they are actually in the Middle-East. Scenic descriptions are few and far between and the ones that can be found, usually resort to cliche's and other generic descriptions. On a positive note, Howard does insert a few Middle-Eastern phrases for a little bit of flavor.
As for the main character, El Borak doesn't come across as very unique, other than the fact that he is an American in the Middle-East and usually has a nice rifle or pistol at hand to compliment his sword. There are occasional hints at his past in the States and Howard often tries to draw parallels between the Southwest and the Middle-East. Having grown up in Arizona and having been to the Middle-East many times myself, the two are not very similar at all. The empty deserts of Iraq are far different than the cactus-infested deserts outside of Tucson, Arizona.
