About the Author
Charles Robertson has been a licensed attorney in Texas since 1969. When the State Bar created the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in 1974, he became one of the first lawyers in Texas to be designated as a Family Law Specialist. Throughout his career, he has participated in the state, local and national organizations that improve the quality of the practice of Family Law. For several years, he served as the Chairman of the Family Law Exam Commission. He is also a past Chairman of both the Family Law Section and the Judiciary Committee of the Dallas Bar Association. Charles has been a member of the Family Law Council of the State Bar of Texas, is a founding member of the Legal Assistants Division of the State Bar and is a member of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. He is a co-author of the Texas Family Law Trial Guide. Charles lives in Dallas with his wife Ann, dogs Rufus and Quincy, and cats Samantha and Amos. Nonstop entertainment. Robertson packs his stories with drama, romance, humor, charm, and adventure. From his undercover sting operation in law school to his clever and compassionate coaching of a learning disabled child, the author clearly is not someone who sits on the sidelines. We meet a gigolo, a judge with kinky sex practices, and a process server whose method of delivering the divorce motion will surprise you. Trial exhibits are stolen in the night, children are poised to fall through the cracks, and each adventure requires quick and clever thinking, which Robertson delivers again and again.

About a Justice of the Peace he worked with as a law student Robertson writes, “He did a wonderful job of educating us and entertaining us at the same time.” The compliment applies equally to Robertson. You will learn important tidbits of law, as well as time-tested relationship advice from a family lawyer who has been in the trenches and carefully observed the anatomy of failed marriages. The beauty of the book is that the learning is secondary. No lectures or expositions. Just stories. Darned good stories.

Beginning with his days in law school, Robertson took his role seriously as a gladiator fighting for justice. Along the way he left his mark on how Texas family law is practiced; his efforts improved a system that sometimes resists reform.

The only drawback of this book is that I read through the stories too quickly and the end left me hungry for more. Please, Charles Robertson, give us more trial, tribulations, and fascinating stories.

This Fly is Pleased

If you are looking to buy this book: Do it.

This is the first review I've ever written and I assure you I'm no salesman or push-pony. Trust me when I say you should definitely read this book by Charles Robertson.

I am going through a divorce, so I was looking for books and information that offered insight to how the Family Law system in Texas really works. And what a better way to do it than with a book written by a lawyer, I thought to myself at the time.

Boy did I ever find what I was hoping for and then some.

After reading it, I felt like a fly that had a prime spot on a wall in a dark, smoke-filled room full of Judges and Divorce Lawyers playing a late night poker game. This kind of guerilla insight is exactly what I was looking for.

Not only did I come away with insight, I was also humbled by the life wisdom, delighted by the humor and absolutely tickled with how much CHARACTER it has. Not to mention the characters, who "literaturely" came alive and who were aplenty. As a result, this book is (unexpectedly) entertaining and at times reads more like a good fiction novel. It's almost as if Mr Robertson is an author-turned-lawyer, NOT lawyer-turned-author.

I'd say Mr Robertson missed his calling, but maybe not...He hints at a Volume II and now I see he's written other books.
I don't know how those are (yet) but if you're sitting on the fence about this one, I can say with certainty that you won't be disappointed.

This book has proven to me that it is more than possible for a Lawyer to have a heart and write in a language people can understand and after this whole reading experience, I have hope for his species after all.

Now bring on that Volume II, Mr Robertson! (And a hard-cover edition wouldn't hurt either considering my copy is now dog-eared but not by the hands of My Mom who read it as well, flew through it, and could be heard on more than a few occasions laughing out loud. Just saying...)

A Legacy from the Courtroom

Mr. Robertson is an outstanding attorney who shares his personal life and a career with us in this fun, light-hearted, and colorful documentary of the Texas legal system.

There are three things that become evident about Mr. Robertson. He is a talented attorney who thinks “outside-the-box” to help his clients. If he doesn’t have answers he works and digs until he has found an answer that will benefit his case.

He also cares about his clients and treats them with respect as genuine persons. From Little League baseball to the courtroom his generosity and regard for mankind is evident in his walk through life.

Finally, he gave back to the profession by serving in many capacities to make the legal system work better for everyone. His legacy as a professional will out live him.

Mr. Robertson was way ahead of his time and shares what he did and what he learned from some very unusual and spicy court cases. Just when you figured out how a case would play out, a new twist or development occurs - but Mr. Robertson always seemed to come through with another insightful solution.

This book should be required reading for every graduating law student in the country.

About the Author
O. Henry (William Sydney Porter, 1862-1910) was an American short-story writer. In his writing, O. I'm glad O Henry escaped prison

I am glad O Henry escaped from his Texas prison, because his period of exile in Honduras provided him with beautiful fodder for this book. Actually, it is a series of linking vignettes about a mythical town (Coralio) in the mythical Central American "Banana Republic" of Anchuria. The protagonists are American and other foreign misfits who have formed a colony along the disease ridden coast of Anchuria. Achingly funny stories populate Cabbages and Kings, especially the one about an Irish Soldier of Fortune who gets swindled by a Guatemalan general and seeks revenge. Although extremely humourous, Cabbages and Kings is historically valuable as well. It provides an accurate representation of turn-of-the-century life in Caribbean Honduras.

This appears to be part of a series of books printed by Doubleday, Page & Co. containing most of O'Henry's short stories. Originally the books were printed between 1904 and 1919 by P.F Collier & Son. This particular collection was reprinted in 1922. I cannot be sure, but I believe the entire series was 12 books total. Each book in this 1922 series is titled by the first short story in the book, but there are always around 20 to 30 different stories in each book.

This volume, Cabbages and Kings, contains nineteen short stories in 312 pages: The Proem: By the Carpenter; "Fox-in-the-Morning"; The Lotus and the Bottle; Smith; Caught; Cupid's Exile Number Two; The Phonograph and the Graft; Money Maze; The Admiral; The Flag Paramount; The Shamrock and the Palm; The Remnants of the Code; Shoes; Ships; Masters of Arts; Dicky; Rouge et Noir; Two Recalls; and The Vitagraphoscope.

A precursor of magic realism

While on the run from U.S. authorities, O. Henry had to spend a season or so in Honduras at the beginning of the 20th century and this fun story of crooked foreigners and ambitious locals was oen of the results. The fact that its title is drawn from Through the Looking Glass is hardly surprising, for this master of dialogue, nuance, and the lives of little people would appear to be at home in this strangely warped country of "Anchuria." Literary connoisseurs will say that, in formulating magical realism, Garcia Marquez drew extensively from Faulkner. Maybe so, but he could just as easily have read O. Henry and gotten some of the same inspiration. This audio version is well-arranged, the narration clear and attractive.

From the scraps of paper found in an old, Great Depression Floridian town called Toad Springs, Susan Adger weaves the tales of the town's inhabitants throughout the years. From the new Preacher with a questionable past to the rocky father-son relationship of Landis and Wilton and the unfortunate secret shared between them, Adger shows what makes this town quintessentially Florida, from the characters' happy sunshine in their successes to the bitter sadness residing in the swamps of their darkest days.

To Read or Not to Read:
Read. Definitely give this book a strong consideration. The prose is beautiful, the stories are entertaining, and there is just something special about a Florida town where strawberries, scandal, salvation, and fertilizer recipes can all come together in one book.

What I liked:
Seashells is full of the quiet dignity of the ordinary. It revels its simplicity, and its simplicity is alluring. Seashells makes its characters so human; they are people, just plain people, showing their heart to the reader from the hopes and dreams that Elsie Lou has of a life with Galen to the despair and failure of Gladys Heppner to ever fit in. The book is written with a Southern dialect, and though that frustrated me in the first few pages, I was quickly drawn into the stories themselves, as it just felt right.
What I also liked a lot was how an incident glossed over in a previous story would become clarified in, and sometimes even become the central focus, of the next story- in all, Seashells is composed of 14 such interrelated stories. There are some tales that are downright funny like what happens to Iona's hair in The Beauty Shop at Carrie June's, and others tales that often ended up being unexpectedly sad like that of childhood friends Rusty and Worthy. The tales shifted between humor and sarcasm, and tragedy and happiness-interwoven between religion, marriage and family, they compile a pleasant mix of what life is and can be for a plethora of people and situations in this town, and I loved the homely feeling of completeness that it brought me.

What I Didn't Like:
Sometimes I felt like the sense of time through which the story was told was a little skewed and confusing, and I would have liked to have had a list of the characters and who was related to whom, friends with whom, and so forth. It could be a little hard at times to get the full impact and meaning of one story if I forgot what that same character had done in a different prior story beforehand. Also, the prologue and epilogue felt a little forced as they tried to give the stories a context from a future person's perspective that the stories didn't really need. And finally, as with most short story books, some stories were certainly more compelling than others, and there were a few stories (most notably Sorrie May's) where I was disappointed in how little I learned about the characters involved.

This book has everything you could want from a 1930's small town in Florida, a preacher straight out of prison, sewing circles, beauty parlor disasters, and evan a murder; well according to Sorry May any way. Ms. Adger's stories come from a rich family history and are told as only one who has heard them from their own Grandmother can tell. The characters in this book will enchanted you, and bring you laughter. Treat yourself to a wonderful trip down memory lane and buy it today! A Delightful Read

For me the sign of a good book is the feeling you get when you finish reading it. If you feel you have lost a good friend, it was a good book. And that's how I felt when I finished reading Seashells, Gator Bones and the Church Of Everlasting Liability.

Adger delights us with down home stories of a time long forgotten. We've lost touch with the kind of people we find in this book, small town folks who have to grapple with life on its own
terms and find ways to make the best of things without the luxury of choices we have today. They tell their stories in the first person and you find out who hates who, who is lying to who,
but underneath it all you come to understand and feel for them. These are real people with real stories and by the time you are finished you feel like you've gotten to know them as friends.

Adger has a real talent for getting inside her character's heads. And you'll be simply delighted with the dangburn idioms that come out of these people's mouths. I laughed out loud at the
unique way they had of expressing themselves.

All in all, a wonderful book. Now that I am finished reading it, I'm going to read it again, Just for the sheer pleasure of it.

Couldn't put this book down.loved the characters.well worth reading.I read one other of her books and it was the best I'll be getting all others that's she's written.great job

Great book. Loved it. It would make a perfect screenplay for a good chick flick. I could see the movie the whole time I read it and even had the cast figured out.

Sequel Please !

How do you turn a bad breakup with the one you love into a courageous uplifting revelation? Invite some friends and go on an adventure of a lifetime together. Stay open for lots of gorgeous scenery, interesting conversation, fabulous mouth watering food and lots and lots of let's say thirst quenching booze.
My head is still throbbing is why I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5.

On this bike trip Sloane Ranger, our heroine, discovers she is not only still very hot but that she doesn't need validation from her ex husband. He had dumped her for a much younger woman. I love books that lift the female human spirit. Sloane has a lot of class ( when she's not drinking ). She is hurt but not damaged.

The author of Bike Bags, Jill Ireland, actually talks to you in the first person and convinces you that you are right there on the trip of a lifetime with the rest of the gang. This gang is a mixed group of characters of all ages....Take notes ..they are many and each have something unique to share.

No one is left without their own personal spiritual resurrection of sorts. When the adventure is over the plot thickens and our heroine doesn't miss a beat.
I think I will drink to that..hickup. Fascinating fun and lots of hysterical comedy. Someone actually exposes themselves OH MY !!!!
However .......My favorite part of the book was ...well you'll figure it out....
I'm a hopeless romantic but this plot line was really elegantly written for those of us who like to be discreet. It left me very satisfied indeed.
Sequel please !
