Easy but not boring!

These crosswords are easy, yes, but not at all boring. Many of the clues were quite clever and funny, as were most of the themed crosswords. My brother bought it for me when I needed something to keep me occupied and get my mind off my grief while our mother was dying. Somehow crosswords help me to relax; but with the stress I couldn't concentrate on more difficult puzzles or even read easy fiction, which is what I normally do when I have to sit around and wait.

I recommend this series of crossword books. Much better than the annoying New York Times books - although I must admit I still do the NYT puzzles, even though I often get irritated at them; clues and puzzles are rarely clever or funny.

This book was perfect. I've since gone on to Tougher Tuesdays #2 and enjoyed it too. I'm looking forward to the delivery of the Wednesday crosswords book.

Just right!!!

I really enjoyed doing these puzzles. I had been doing NY Times puzzle books but when I went in to a bookstore to pass some time waiting for a friend, I found this book and bought it on a whim....so glad I did. They are entertaining and also tweek your brain without totally frustrating you. The puzzles are titled so if you are stumped, the title will often help you over the hump. I like to do my puzzles in bed before I fall asleep so the spiral binding is wonderful! It allows me to fold back the total page and keep the book upright and sturdy. I did the last puzzle last night and was a titch sad at its completion so got on Amazon to look for more. I am going to order the first book of Monday puzzles and try a Tuesday book.

Good Puzzles.. Easy, but not too easy.. Worth the money. The NY Times Monday and Easy crossword book series by Will Shortz are better.. But these are good.

About the Author
Eddie Flores, Jr. is a distinguished entrepreneur and community philanthropist in Hawaii. He is the founder and CEO of L&L Hawaiian Barbecue, a unique restaurant concept with 200 locations worldwide. Eddie was born in Hong Kong to a Filipino father and a Chinese mother and immigrated to America with his family when he was 16. Eddie graduated from the University of Hawai'i with a bachelor's degree and also earned a master's degree from the University of Oklahoma. Eddie speaks and reads Chinese and has extensive dealings with Chinese in the United States and in China. Prior to starting L&L, Eddie worked as a business broker listing and selling restaurants for many Chinese clients. Eddie worked extensively to plan and facilitate the opening of L&L Hawaiian Barbecue in China and achieved success in 2012 when L&L opened its first store in the province of Guangdong. Eddie is also the 2015 president of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Hawaii and previously served on the board of the East West Center. Eddie is also a leading authority on the Hawaii real estate market and one of the state's most popular real estate instructors. Considered the first great American novel, part of Finn's charm is the wisdom and sobering social criticism deftly lurking amongst the seemingly innocent observations of the uneducated Huck and the even-less-educated escaped slave, Jim. William Dufris's voice, unpretentious and disarming, like the book's main characters, seems the perfect armature on which to hang this literary strategy. Although he does an expert job with the entire cast, Dufris's delivery of Jim's dialogue is his crowning achievement. Out of context, Dufris's Jim might sound mocking and racist, due to his expert delivery of Twain's regional vernacular. Ignorance and intelligence, however, are not mutually exclusive, and taken as a whole, Jim's mind and heart come shining through, allowing the listener to reflect on their own assumptions. Grade 5 Up-British actor Mike McShane provides a superb portrayal of Mark Twain's classic characters, nailing the Mississippi drawl and cadence. For those who know and love the story or are following along with an unabridged edition, however, this production is marred somewhat by what the publisher has chosen to leave out. The more descriptive chapters are shortened or expurgated entirely, which is understandable in the interest of editing for time. Some of the more distasteful racial epithets are gone as well, although Injun Joe retains his moniker. Sid and Mary are also cut entirely, as well as references to smoking, slavery, most of Tom's ludicrously funny romantic notions about the violence inflicted by pirates and robbers, and even the naked figure in the schoolmaster's anatomy book. The result is a watered down Tom and, especially, Huck. The ending also lacks the satisfaction of the original version. The party scene where the fortune is revealed has been cut as has Twain's concluding paragraphs which "endeth this chronicle." It lacks even the closure of the customary, "You have been listening to-." The sturdy plastic case will survive many circulations. If your facility serves an elementary-age population for which the language of the original would not be appropriate, or there is a teacher looking for a sanitized version, McShane's excellent performance makes this edition worth recommending.

Judge this book by it's cover!

This review applies specifically to the April 2010, Sterling Edition, illustrated by Robert Ingpen:
I'm beginning to feel quite frustrated with the limited publishing information given to books on Amazon. For example, most books where you may click to "look inside" will default to the most common paperback. For books like Tom Sawyer, that is fine if you need the book for high school English class, where any copy cheap enough to write notes in the margins will do. I wanted a copy of Tom Sawyer to keep and love. I saw this publication on Amazon, but it had so little info and the one review given was a single sentence about the general value of Twain's story. The truth is, one doesn't buy this particular printing unless one is already convinced of it's literary excellency! So I am about to do Amazon a huge favor by telling you what it didn't tell me. For about $15, the asking price at the time of this review, you can invest in a real treat for your self or someone you love and wish to inspire.
This printing was meant to mark the one hundredth anniversary of Twain's death (2010). The story is unabridged, provided in full original text. It is positively rich with watercolor illustrations by Robert Ingpen. I just skimmed through the book looking for one that I especially liked, but I couldn't pick just one. In design, they are exactly as I would have dreamed them to be. Barefoot Tom, balancing a piece of straw on his nose, Huck Finn with a dead cat, Tom and puppy in church, Injun Joe- terrifying....each one pulls me in to read the text. The fabulous, wrapping cover art is also printed at the end of the book, so won't be lost if the dust jacket is damaged. The sewn binding is well constructed and the book lays nearly flat when open, so you may enjoy all of the pictures and layout without damaging the book. The inclusion of a pale blue place marking ribbon is a lovely touch. There is a thoughtful biography of Mark Twain proceeding the story. Also, provided are the author's and illustrators notes.
I have a boy, six going on seven. He is a reader and is happy to consume Magic Tree House and Box Car Children books at alarming speed under the covers at night when he is supposed to be asleep. I'll admit I was missing our former habit of reading together. So we read classics aloud together as a family. For less money than a video game this book will provide hours of family entertainment. I hope my son will be inspired to read it again and again. It will have a place in our library and be a reference for years to come. It is heirloom quality. It would make a very special gift to a favorite boy of any age. In fact, I am considering getting another copy for my father, who loves Twain.
Incidentally, not being able to ascertain the quality of this book through the Amazon web site, I went to a little local bookstore where I could put my hands on it first. I ended up buying it there, paying full price- about $5 more than Amazon was asking. They wrapped the book for free in nice heavy paper and since there was no shipping- I think I came out better for it. Before my son had opened this package, he knew it was a book to be awed by. Awesome it is- mostly for Mark Twains' masterful kntting of prose, but also for the cover and publishing.

This edition is not abridged!

I just want to point out that this hardcover Everyman's Library edition is not abridged. Most of the reviews posted here apply to the Signet mass market edition, which apparently is abridged. The Everyman's edition contains both novels in full.

This edition is missing some passages from the original works. For example, there are about three pages missing (as measured from a paperback copy) from Chapter 21 of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Entertaining, old-fashioned, railroad-themed, puzzle-mysteries

UPDATED 12-08-14: This is a 1912 collection from Black Heath of 15 short stories by Victor L. Whitechurch originally published earlier in the "Strand" magazine. The best of these feature railway detective Thorpe Hazell, credited by some as being the FIRST specialist railway detective (though that honor may actually belong to another of Whitechurch's railways detectives, Godfrey Page, who seems to have appeared earlier). Like the better known and more famous Sherlock Holmes, Hazell is eccentric, but in his own, health-faddish way; unlike Holmes, he sadly does not have a Watson. I generally prefer the stories in which he appears; these stories are very enjoyable even though they are essentially mystery puzzles. By this I mean the emphasis of each plot is on setting up the crime and then depicting its solution, not on prolonged character development, plot complications, red-herrings, or lengthy description (though I did find relevant details pertaining to early 20th century train operations particularly interesting). This results in relatively short, no-nonsense stories imparted in a matter-of-fact style refreshingly free from the flowery, overly-written language of some other authors of the era. They do have a definite period "feel" (rather than, perhaps, a period "charm"), and overall, while well-written, are not quite as artfully done as those by Doyle. Nevertheless, those in search of discovering a new batch of old detective stories should greatly enjoy this nicely-formatted set of entertaining, old-fashioned tales. BUT...

Since I originally wrote the above, a new ebook collection of 28 stories and 1 novel ("Murder at the Pageant") by Whitechurch has been issued by Timeless Wisdom; that collection provides these very same 15 stories plus 13 more and a novel for only $.99. Quite educational in and old world style

I quite enjoyed it, the stories all centred around signals and timetables and manipulating around these. No real murder mysteries as such but more on diplomatic intrigue. Not being very mechanical minded most of the workings went over my head, but the stories still held an interest and finished the book. A real insight of the workings before computers, and a real respect for the people who managed these systems without calamity and with easy.

Mystery & Suspense on the Rails

The tales in this book are a bit dated from a modern point of view, but railfans such as myself will enjoy them for the period is ever bright and fresh for us. Whitechurch was an expert on trains, railway administration, and the people who worked on the railways, and that expertise shows up in every story. He was, however, careful not to let his knowledge get in the way of a good story, so in the few times when he strays from absolute veracity it's always in a good cause. A most enjoyable book.

Too many flourishes

It's difficult to concentrate on the analysis because of Lakdawala's hyperbole, strange metaphors, and literary flourishes. This is supposed to be a chess book, not a collection of idiosyncratic essays. Perhaps the author fancies himself a 19th century man of letters -- but his style is singularly inappropriate for annotating chess games.

Bernice Erehart was born and raised on the Jersey Shore. She is the middle child of Howard and Vincenza, with two older sisters and an older brother, as well as three younger sisters. Because of them she is now aunt to six nephews and five nieces, and great aunt to five great nephews and five great nieces. Bernice has been writing short stories for as long as she can remember, and feels there are many more to come. She still lives at the Jersey Shore with her furry children Boo, Chipee and Lucy. Bernice Erehart's first novel Out of Time was published early 2014 .

I loved the short stories in "Weekend Shorts"

I loved the short stories in "Weekend Shorts". If you haven't had the chance to read anything of Ms. Ereharts, this is the book to start. "Dating With a Russian Flair" was delightful to read and kept me guessing until the end. BUT my favorites are "The CEO" and "The Hole". She has a flare with her writing with a little biting edge of karma. I would love her to continue both her short stories and her books. Also a great read "Out of Time"

Almost too much fun!

Ms Erehart once again gives us a glimpse into her wild imagination...and what a fun, exhausting ride! Favorites were "Larry" (a sweet, poignant story) and "Homer and the General." Laugh out loud fun. A must read. Hoping for more from Ms. Erehart soon.

twisted endings make great reads.

I loved these short stories, although a few were too short. I really enjoyed the twisted endings on the stories and Liked the way the author drew you in and kept you there. Great job, I would love to read more stories by this author and hope to read a full length novel.
