About the Author
Daniel Arnold began climbing the Pacific Rim volcanoes and basalt crags of his native Portland as a teenager and went on to climb throughout North and South America. His work has appeared in Rock + Ice, ZYZZYVA, and The Mountain Gazette. His two books are Salt to Summit and Early Days in the Range of Light. He lives and climbs in Sonora, CA.

Some stories are great. Some are not.

Usually on top of things, my local library, goofed and misclassified "Snowblind." The library had it catalogued and located in the nonfiction section of the library. I was well into the third story before I realized that "Snowblind" is a work of fiction rather than nonfiction. That is a healthy sign that Daniel Arnold has written a set of believable, as well as compelling tales.
I rate "Snowblind" as three-stars only because I feel the tales are uneven. The outstanding and strongest story is "No Place for Vagabonds," also the longest story in "Snowblind," a richly-woven ascent of K-2. A second strong story is "The Skin of the World" in which a rescue is attempted of an injured "Russian" climber. The tension between the two climbers attempting the rescue is palpable. Another strong story, one of the shorter ones, is the death of climbing partner, Rex in the Andes. If all the stories were at this level, "Snowblind" would earn the full, five stars.
However, "Snowblind" is tarnished by several stories which are entirely forgettable. At times, Arnold riffs on in a style of exaggeration and overreach which becomes annoying. When he gets it right, he nails it and the story engages you fully. When he overreaches, he misses and you lose attention and interest.
I would like to have given "Snowblind" five or four stars because the best of the stories are at that level. So as a reader, focus on the best stories in "Snowblind" because several of them are great, well worth the read.

Absorbing climbing stories

Collection of well written short stories. I particularly enjoyed the stories that took place in the Himalayas. I am a hopeless armchair climber.

Call it "Choss Fiction" throw down the $10 and read it on your next flight

I love this stuff. Nice imagery and crazy characters in places we know doing stuff we did/do/will.
How come boaters hikers and skiers can't write like this? It's like a cross between Roberts and that guy who wrote call of the wild.
Maybe it's a bit monotonous but it's like cruising exhilarating monotony and I just wanted more.
