Apparently So: A collection of short humor and other articles from a distinguished writing career, by Mr. David L. Price

Apparently So is a compilation of 42 short articles written during the distinguished career of David L. Price. They include humorous tales such as how he got into a drunken fistfight with one of his cats and how to survive an elevator crash from dozens of floors above the ground. Also included are clever poems, beautifully illustrated by his talented artist friends, Alex Carr and Mira Dabrowski. One of the poems is a racy limerick that got his children in trouble for repeating it to their middle-school friends, even though they promised to all things holy that they wouldn't. On the other side of the emotional curve, the book features a moving Prologue and Epilogue about his May 2014 diagnosis of terminal bile duct cancer, which he continues to fight with western medicine and the power of prayer from his wife, family and friends; and accounts of his long struggles with chronic illness and anxiety, and drug and alcohol addiction. Featuring both humor and poignancy is a moving account of how he and his Brazilian wife found each other while living 7,500 miles apart, and then planned and carried out a full church wedding in only three weeks in fall 2014. This is only a small sampling of the rich stories inside. As someone who read the book commented: "David L. Price (not the baseball pitcher) is that rare humor writer who can make you laugh out loud in some stories and bring you to tears in others with his honest observations on life."

"He was easy to wound
By jayrc
Apparently So, David Price's second book in the past year, is a witty, insightful and sometimes touching collection of his writing during his 40-year career. While his debut novel, Slugger, demonstrated his gift for humor, storytelling and turn of phrase, Apparently So truly showcases his creativity and comedic talents. Writing about a trip to his ancestral home in Wales, David writes, "...we stood on the same spot where my Celtic ancestors lit fires to warn neighboring tribe members that the English army was making their way, with the intent of inflicting Parliament, Beowulf and Mr. Bean onto the ancient Druid culture of Wales."

Humor is clearly David's forte, but he tells equally gripping stories about a life punctuated with pain -- Crohn's disease, alcohol and drug addictions, divorce and, in 2014, the diagnosis of terminal cancer. He even handles that devastating news with humor, suggesting that his tombstone read, "He was easy to wound, tough to kill." David ends the book on a high note with the unlikely story of finding his true love 7,500 miles away in Brazil, on the other end of an online chat room. He and Fatima were married in October 2014, and are enjoying each and every day together.

Does this have the making of a Hollywood story? Apparently So.

Funny, poignant, life affirming fare
By YosemiteSyd
Anyone who worked at Hewlett Packard Company back in the day most likely had a laugh at David Price’s expense. The currency I’m talking about is years spent honing his craft as an artful writer with a killer sense of the comic. David finds comedy in the ordinary, extraordinary, and tragic moments in life and recounts those moments in vignettes that deliver one of the most healing balms God has given us—laughter. Within his wit beats a heart of wisdom learned in the school of hard knocks.

Even if you haven’t worked at HP, if you’ve ever travelled on business, tried to impress a woman, marveled at what comes out of the mouths of children, or shared your life with a cat, you will find yourself nodding your head and laughing out loud. It’s a great book to put on your eReader for the times you need a quick pick-me-up in your day. But I warn you, like candy in a box, you can’t enjoy just one.

For Bay Area folks, even a paragraph as mundane as taking a U-turn in Los Gatos, CA while a voice crackles in your cell phone, “you passed us twenty minutes ago,” recalls a specific place but also our common experience. (I was thinking, yeah, that building wasn’t up twenty minutes ago. It was a car dealership.)

Apparently So is also an unblinking account of David’s battle with addiction, and the hope that is available to all of us if we are willing to do the tough stuff. Funny, poignant and life affirming fare.

He did it again!
By mjmcc61
Fifteen years ago, I used to anxiously await the latest Apparently So musings of David Price to be published. Invariably, they would amuse, inspire, inform and evoke. And often would make me laugh out loud, sometimes even convulse in tears. In public, like on an airplane. Embarrassingly so.

Now I know that George Carlin once said that suppressed laughter is the easiest to get. But this is different. These are like private jokes meant for close friends. David’s deft touch of everyman experiences and hilarious analogies cannot be kept to yourself. You have to share them with others. Even if you haven’t even met them (or him) before.

He’s done it again, my friends. His story about dating, with the visual of his hobo-criminal dyed beard, just pushed me over the edge. And the people around me are questioning my sanity. So now they too know David as I share this with them. What a gift!
