Heart of Brightness

Jill Paris' "Life is a Walking Safari" is not merely about travel; indeed, it is about the challenge she embraces in life to see the world in all its splendor. This is a story about a life accepted instead of a life regretted.
As a Catholic, but more importantly, as a human, I believe her entry about Lourdes in particular resonates strongly whether you believe in God or not. The revelatory nature of her journey is an element of life that a lot of people wonder they will ever experience. It is also a moment a lot of people dread. Jill shows bravery and honesty in Lourdes, offering a glimpse of humanity that you just don't see in usual "travel writing."
Inherent in her writing is an enthusiasm for not just life, but for experiences. Her willingness to go to far-flung corners of the world and not merely cloister herself in things that she knows is a tremendous quality. It is a character aspect that others lack, and because they lack it, they don't know what they are missing. Her wealth of experiences and optimism is more valuable than any commodity.
Sometimes you read a piece of writing and never pick it up again. This won't be one of those books, because Jill writes in a way that helps . This is the kind of read that may only occupy a small portion of your kindle, but a much larger part of your imagination.

I loved this book!

Jill Paris captures the humor of many situations she encounters in her travels. Some of her experiences are also poignant and bittersweet and the surprise endings left me wanting to read more. Jill Paris is the "Bridget Jones" of travel. Her crazy travel adventures would make a great movie!

the most charming, quirky, original travel adventures you may ever read

What a delight! You've never read anything quite like Jill Paris. One minute she's making you laugh out loud, the next she's taken your breath away with some small, poignant moment that perfectly captures the foolishness or courage or hope or wonder of being human. Example of the funny: Jill in the throes of an ill-advised Parisian adventure with a couple of party girls half her age, whose insistence that she is "hot" makes her compare herself to "a chicken that's been taken out of the oven and left on the counter but might still be edible. Even though the time limit for actual hotness has passed, its lukewarm state could be overlooked by the truly starving." Or Jill shopping for a dirndl (a sort of Sound of Music outfit)--never mind WHY she wants to dress like that, the image she gives us of how she looks in those "sleeves with billows the size of eggplants," with her cleavage and everything else squished beyond recognition, is priceless. Example of the exquisitely poignant: Jill makes a pilgrimage to Lourdes, with powerful reasons to seek solace and hope there, but instead of finding answers to her own fears, she finds another human being, a woman named Salam, who needs the comfort and hope that Jill can give even more than Jill needs it for herself. Always self-deprecating, full of a bottomless lust for life and a totally quirky way of looking at the world, Jill Paris doesn't just find adventures when she travels, she makes them--whether she's crashing a wedding in Ireland where she doesn't know anybody, or wandering lost in Florence at four in the morning, or trying, none too successfully, to obey the safety rules on walking safari in Africa--she can find a story anywhere, and it wouldn't be the story anybody else would find. This is one of the most fun, touching, sweet books I've ever read, full of amazing little stories to come back to again and again.
