Napoleon I., whose career had the quality of a duel against the whole of Europe, disliked duelling between the officers of his army. The great military emperor was not a swashbuckler, and had little respect for tradition.
Nevertheless, a story of duelling, which became a legend in the army, runs through the epic of imperial wars. To the surprise and admiration of their fellows, two officers, like insane artists trying to gild refined gold or paint the lily, pursued a private contest through the years of universal carnage. They were officers of cavalry, and their connection with the highspirited but fanciful animal which carries men into battle seems particularly appropriate. It would be difficult to imagine for heroes of this legend two officers of infantry of the line, for example, whose fantasy is tamed by much walking exercise, and whose valour necessarily must be of a more plodding kind. As to gunners or engineers, whose heads are kept cool on a diet of mathematics, it is simply unthinkable...

About the Author
Polish author Joseph Conrad is considered to be one of the greatest English-language novelists, a remarkable achievement considering English was not his first language. Conrad s literary works often featured a nautical setting, reflecting the influences of his early career in the Merchant Navy, and his depictions of the struggles of the human spirit in a cold, indifferent world are best exemplified in such seminal works as Heart of Darkness, Lord JimM, The Secret Agent, Nostromo, and Typhoon. Regarded as a forerunner of modernist literature, Conrad s writing style and characters have influenced such distinguished writers as F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, William S. Burroughs, Hunter S. Thompson, and George Orwell, among many others. Many of Conrad s novels have been adapted for film, most notably Heart of Darkness, which served as the inspiration and foundation for Francis Ford Coppola s 1979 film Apocalypse Now.

A great story.

Ok, I was hooked into this one long ago when I first watched the movie. After a long time I finally decided I wanted to see if the book was better or if the visual effect made for a better story. I'm glad to say both are winners! Joseph Conrad's writing is so descriptive and rich here hat you can easily visualize the environment and the men; both are rich and absorbing, something lacking from many writers. What totally sold me though is that having seen the movie (and how close they were) the visualization was richer and complete with details. Really the combination together is the way to go sinc you get more of the men from the book.

Joseph Conrad is one of the great writers. He is the master of expressing the the frustration felt by a man who finds himself in a tough jam.
The 1977 Ridley Scott film, 'The Duellists' is a fine companion to the novella (well... in the movie they added a mushy part, lol).
I think this edition is one that was 'printed on demand'. It is very nicely put together. A pleasure.
