But for those of us who were succumbed to test drive all the new gadgets and devices, well, it was safer riding a bike without a helmet and pads, drinking water out of a hose, climbing trees, jumping off the roof and egging the neighbor’s car. Seriously, it was.
Don’t believe me? Then sit back, pop a top and prepare for a history lesson they’ll never put in the high school curriculum. When you’ve finished reading this fine work, perhaps you might contact your school district and ask them why they don’t teach real history. I fear if the administrators are close to my age, they will soundly debunk the idea. Not many want to relive their traumatic childhoods. Wimps!

Back to the future, or ... if 8-Track was a good idea, wouldn't 9-Track be better?

They say you get what you pay for, but in this case, you get MUCH more than you pay for, especially for something that currently costs nothing. Since I was born in the late 1950s, I am certainly a child of the '60s and '70s and beyond. The Beatles, the Stones, new technology, disco (yuck)... you get the picture. Mr. Dawson, an excellent writer of numerous books, captured the essence and wonder of all that "new technology" perfectly in "Guinea Pigs." Back them, we were willing to try anything new - and usually did - oftentimes with unintentionally hilarious results. Mr. Dawson took me back to those wondrous times perfectly; I related easily to his experiences and laughed out loud a lot. My own children, currently 27, 19, and 16 have no earthly idea what we "guinea pigs" of the '70s and '80s went through so today's youth can have their TI programmable calculators, ultra-slim laptops, Bluetooth earbuds, online banking, GPS systems, iPhones, Xbox Ones, atomic alarm clocks, and every other modern convenience they take for granted. In fact, I'm going to suggest that my kids read this. Sorry, I need to end this review because the 8-Track player just ate my "Band On the Run" tape..., jeez. Do yourself a favor and get Mr. Dawson's book. It's a quick read and brings those days of yesteryear into sharp focus with a great deal of humor. Trust me, you'll be glad you did.

I received the book from the author. I'm glad I read it as it increased my overall understanding of technological developments in recent history.
I'd recommend the book. It is a quick read and can easily be completed in one sitting. If you grew up in the 70s and 80s, you will easily relate to the author's stories. If not, it is interesting to learn what technological developments in that period looked like. I will always remember that "a door is not a jar" and I can imagine what it would have been like to have the "upgraded" water bed.
The book is well written and humorous, but I somehow expected more from it. Furthermore, as a women I wasn't flattered by some of the descriptions of the women mentioned in the book, most of which related to sex.
My 3 star rating means that it is good and worth your time, but not great in terms of literature.

This new fangled gadget is supposed to help? or kill????? To those who survived 70's technology!

This is a funny, quick, light look at what it was like growing up without all the "gadgets" folks take for granted today. Dawson includes some personal experiences and gives unusual insight for those not familiar with the early versions of curling irons, electronic seatbelts and my personal favorite frustrations...8 track tapes! Highly amusing and will be an eye opener for those born after the kinks had been worked out.
