This book is obviously a love letter to those of us who gamed
By Murph
Disclaimer: I am an old gamer from the late 1970's. This book detailed all those games that I played, and many I never got around to playing. My group and I traveled from D&D, through Chivalry and Sorcery to RuneQuest, Traveller, and Space Opera. This book is obviously a love letter to those of us who gamed, had fun, watched our GPA's drop, met friends who are still friends, and expanded our imaginations. I still have many of my old books which my daughters think are "cool", even though Dad is not :). I literally could not put this book down, and appreciate it details many of the games that I later got involved in, especially R. Talsorian's Cyberpunk 2020. I read this book (and the others in the collection), and find myself nodding my head, remembering these games, designers, and companies. While I pretty much stopped regular gaming in the early 1990's due to work, family, etc, I am still a gamer at heart. Computer games just cannot, and never will have the depth, and meaning that these games detailed in this book did, and still have. I can't recommend this book highly enough, I wish I could give it six stars.

The Definitive Resource
By Knox Eisley
This second volume covering the 1980s is equal in quality to the first volume covering the 1970s. My review of the first volume also applied to this volume and is reproduced below.

This four volume set of books describes the history of the role-playing industry from its infancy to the present. The amount of information contained in these books is staggering. That one individual was able to bring to fruition such a monumental undertaking is beyond impressive. Even more impressive is the quality of the writing. As a player of RPG's, I imagined that I might have a modest interest in the behind-the-scenes story. Here, the books are organized very well. Each individual chapter is self-contained and told in a very interesting and readable way. The four books don't have to be read cover to cover in order. Rather, readers can peruse individual chapters on specific companies. Where references to other chapters are given, just enough information is provided to allow the reader to understand the context without being over redundant. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this and how much I learned from it. Taken together, the content, the writing, the editorial judgment in finding a balance for including the appropriate amount of detail without being bogged down in minutiae results in a really exceptional book on the subject. One imagines that this four-volume series will become the seminal reference for any study of the RPG industry from 1970-2009. For those readers who think they might have an interest in understanding the history of the RPG industry, this is clearly the definitive work.

Insights and history on fan-favorite game companies and their games. My favorite of the series.
By Jose P. Zagal
I played a lot of tabletop games during the 80's and 90's and while I don't have as much time as I used to I wish I did. I also happen to be a game scholar so this book series (see note below) was a welcome addition to my bookshelf and I read them all with great interest. I'd recommend looking at all the volumes in the series (70's, 80's, 90's, 00's). My score and review are for the volume above. Overall I'd rate the entire series as 5 stars. Comments specific to this volume are below:

I was really excited to read this volume mostly because it covered a bunch of companies for a whole lot of games I played when I was younger. What's interesting about this volume (and which continues in the next, to a certain extent) is that you get a picture of an industry that's growing up and becoming established, and branching out in interesting directions. For me, the highlights of this volume include the story behind West End Games (Star Wars, Paranoia, Ghostbusters), R Talsorian (Cyberpunk 2020), Palladium (Robotech, Rifts), ICE (Middle-Earth Role-playing, Rolemaster), Steve Jackson Games (GURPS). This was also the decade where we started to see a lot of games based on license products - so it's interesting to see how those relations played out and, in the case of West End Games and Star Wars, how they re-vitalized fandom. As an added note, this volume helped me really appreciate all the careful "linking" that exists between volumes and different parts of the book. There are lots of sections labeled "for further reading go to XX" that helps and is super interesting and useful for seeing and drawing out those connections. From my own personal biases, this was probably my favorite book.
